Alot of game designers and level designers have an architecture degree. Which makes video games super relevant to the practice of architecture. Especially as a place of experimentation of what society is willing to except in terms of aesthetics.
Another great video ! Every time you both play a video game, the episode gets super passive aggressive specially when you kill each other repeatedly, its like passive aggressive therapy, very amusing to watch. Great movie clips and bibliography references, deeply appreciated !

Hello Archimarathon, Can you guys make a talk about concept stage ? How a professional architect builds up an idea and what we need to concentrate on this stage such as light, wind, sun..etc. A recommendation from none-architecture background fan 🙂
I fell in love with Witcher 3 because of all the medieval towns and little villages, stayed for the game though, it's also pretty cool. Right now I'm playing RDR2, also love it because the world is so beautiful, the town's and also the landscape too! It's like stepping back in time, or visiting Sovereign Hill 😅

I really enjoy assassin's creed for many of the same reason mentioned in this video (not post modernism obviously). Mainly because of the level detail and the attempt to show what a lot of historic cities use to look like before modernisation. In a way Assassin creed can be a learning tool about how organic the ancient cities were and how interested the urban spaces that developed out of it, as well as how people used them back then. It is certainly good food for thought for Architects and urban designers. Maybe that's a game you can play next.

This video makes me think and see the city where I grew up in a different way – Macau (aka the Las Vegas of the East). There is a whole reclaimed area of casinos. In which, we got lots of ‘post-modernism’ gimmicks – In front of the Parisian hotel, of course there’s a Eiffel Tower; in Venetian hotel, there’s a indoor canal and indoor take sky. They are superficial 2D representations of the complex cultures, and they were out of context. However, overtime, I think it ( the Venetian ) become part of the context of Macau. Because Macau is small in area and high density, everything is sort of intertwined. Residential towers, social facilities and markets are all within walking distance to the casinos. And locals will actually use those casino hotels in daily life. Me and my buddies always go to the food court along the ‘Venetian canal’ after playing basketball at a local outdoor basketball court as normal after school activity. Those buildings I won’t say are architectures, but they are defiantly part of our generation’s collective memory.
Games~My favourite topic! Nothing to do with post-modernism but in my opinion Bioshock (particular Infinite) has one of the best world building and storyline ever~

I acquired that book of Charles Jencks some time ago, i haven't read it yet, but now i will. By the way, I recommend you the game Dead Space II. It has a very beautiful architecture and massive ammount of detailed scenarios. It's not a multiplayer game, but it's a "survival horror", a category that i like a lot. I enjoy this channel very much, keep it up.

Great video! I love that you guys are talking about gaming in a serious context – there is so much great design in games. I'd love to see you guys take a look at games like Mirror's Edge or Dishonored, not only do they both have strong art direction, but the core gameplay of both of those games revolve entirely around how the characters move around and interacts with the world. While playing them (and many other games) I felt that there is definitely something architects can learn from how video game level designers subtly direct players around a level.

Last few Assassin's Creed did a good job capturing iconic architecture, really enjoy the game on the architecture aspect alone.
I'm not one for video games but this game might just be the gateway drug.
I have to agree that Postmodernism is uncomfortable and disconcerting. A lot of postmodern buildings just look weird and referential for no purpose. That's not to say that ornamentation doesn't have a role to play, but that's another story…
As a born and raised Sydneysider there's something off about the Harbour Bridge there as well!!!

There's a great site on that topic called Archigame.pl but it's in Polish, Google Translate is a useful tool there. One of my all time favourites is Mass Effect, it's great at depicting various [alien] cultures and their architecture that plays into the game's narrative.
Well i learnt lots of stuffs today. Great video guys, keep up the great content!
