  1. Consciousness is a very mysterious thing. Our outward behavior, our expressions of emotion, communication, responses to our environment, are all things that can be measured, tested and explained. But it's like the forth wall of our mind has a crack in it, and the slightest hint of something pokes through. The only "trick" that this enigmatic something is able to perform, that we know for sure, is to impose itself on our brains. It makes itself known, and that's it. It's simple, but at the same time it is one of the greatest mysteries of existence.

  2. thinking about thinking of yourself from someone elses point of view or someone elses point of view in general is trippy, like do we all see the same or do we see the same because we are taught to see the same? ex, everyone knows to say which color is red because from a young age we were all taught what red was.

  4. I've just about come to the conclusion that most, if not all of the major problems of the world are due to left-over animal drives like territorial behaviors, and natural suspicion of other people and members of "tribes" outside of our own, etc. I also feel that hoarding of resources, (greed), by the "elite" seems to be an obsolete, out of control instinct related to gathering and protecting vital resources. Humans share a plethora of instinctual behaviors with all the other animals on Earth.

  5. Really the best trick the brain pulls, is hiding all the tricks it pulls to cobble together consciousness and making it feel seamless.

The real rabbit hole is learning about those tricks, so we better know how our mind operates, and can make better decisions, and avoid others using those tricks to influence us.

  6. What confuses me is that when my dog looks into a mirror its obvious she knows its not another dog, so what does she think it is?

  7. It's very difficult to avoid anthropocentrism when thinking about consciousness in other species.. especially given that we don't even have any good working definitions of our own consciousnesses.. as there are almost certainly many types of them…?
the fact that an animal does not respond to an altered image in the same way as us does not show that it has no self awareness..

  8. What if the mirror test has something to do with the visual perception of the animal? What if they sense their individuality better through sense of smell rather than sight?
