Friendly Atheist

Philosopher and author Daniel Dennett died on April 19 at age 82.

This is a brief video where I talk about the two projects he worked on that will forever remain in my mind.

  1. I am sorry but not surprised. I noticed how tired and unwell he looked the last time I saw him on an interview. 😢 My Condolences to family and friends.

  2. What is wrong with the definition of true religion in the book of James Chapter 1 verse 27? Religion that God our Father approves of is to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep yourself from being polluted by the world's corrupt ways? I'm guessing that the gentleman who has just died would have continued practicing that kind way of living even if non essential, so called religious practice had become far less significant to him. People who have faith in God and Jesus can get discouraged by lack of daily encouragement from fellow beleivers who "get hardened by sins deceitfulness." The God I have heard speak to me once, (to my heart not my ear) waits for all his children to be reconciled to him like the loving father in the parable of the prodigal son. His timing is perfect and love boundless.
My short experience 30 or so years ago.
I'd memorised John 14.21 encouraged by a discipleship group called the Navigators (kind decent Christians!)
"Whoever has my commands and obeys them she/he is the one who loves me. He/she who loves me will be loved by my father and I too will love them and show myself to them." (the she bits are added by my to emphasise (whoever) , females are equally precious!❤️)
Walking past the Sheffield University Arts tower, I heard this voice in my heart." Look, not only do you have a desire to get to know me, I have a desire to show myself to you, please obey my commands so I will be able to moreso!"

    E. S. P. Clough 🙂

  3. as someone that is a secular atheist humanist and also has a Master's Degree in artificial intelligence, i especially celebrate the good life of Daniel Dennett and i am glad he got to have over eight decades. he brought his emotional intelligence and empathy to all of his works, from understanding cognitive science and intelligence to secular atheism and the Clergy Project. he will be missed and well remembered.

  4. Thank you Hemant. That is sad news indeed. What a pleasant man Mr. Dennet was. I'm not into funerals, but I'd love to hear people who knew him well, and what they say. 🇦🇺

  5. For me, his best book was Darwin's Dangerous Idea. I picked that up when I tried to be a philosophy major, and it changed my way of looking at the world in so many ways.

  6. I left the faith because of believers denying reality, and denying rational arguments with no counter-arguments.
Zero reason and zero evidence means believing in supernatural beings and magic is indefensible and has no difference with primitive natives with painted faces dancing around a campfire while wearing grass skirts trying to invoke the god of rain or the god of good hunting.

  7. I've been aware of the Clergy Project for many years but I didn't know that Dennett was involved much less instrumental in its creation!
Even if he hadn't done anything else, this alone would be an awesome legacy.

  8. He believes in hell now. Why? Because he lives there now! There are no atheists in hell because they are there, but they can't escape it sadly. Dennet is there w God mockers, God deniers, God haters Hitchins, Carlin, Madelyn Murray Ohair, Ayen Rand, etc.

  9. I first came across Dennett in Jonathan Miller's documentary " Atheism: A Rough History of Disbelief" Miller later posted the full interviews from his documentary, called The Atheism Tapes", to show the extended thoughtful discussions he had with Daniel Dennett, Richard Dawkins, Arthur Miller, Deny Turner, Colin McGinn and Steven Weinberg. Great stuff.

  10. As a member of the clergy project I will always be indebted to Daniel Dennett. I wouldn’t have survived my deconversion and departure from religion/ministry without the resources that sprang from his work. (His work also had a big influence on my thinking). I’m thankful I was able to to exist at the same time as this kind intellectual giant.

  11. Dennett is gone? Maybe “deepity” will catch on to honor him. I hope his contributions are remembered.

Ung. Now the only two horsemen left alive (Harris and Dawkins) are spouting anti-scientific gibberish (Bell Curve indulgence and anti-trans ignorance, respectively.)

  12. I loved Dr. Daniel Dennett, very sad to hear about his passing, I've would have loved to meet him, he was my absolute favorite, an intellectual giant, a legend, true sage, heard he was also very kind gentle person, huge loss to civilization, I will watch tons of his lectures in the next few days in his memory

  13. His only real 'contribution' was to say animals have no consciousness, intelligence or feelings humans need to respect.

Just warmed-over Descartes, and of course, far less important.

His work will wither on the vine. A minor figure elevated to celebrity by his angry atheism.
