Many multinational companies have implemented a common corporate language, usually English. However, at the same time, when it comes to top-level decision making they rely on experts for whom English is a second language. Will this combination of language policy and non-native English-speaking experts have the desired performance outcomes? In their 2014 study ‘Brain drain: The cognitive neuroscience of foreign language processing in multinational corporations’, Dr Stefan Volk and his co-authors, T. Kohler and M. Pudelko, raise some surprising notions for consideration.
