i always love a good conversTation.
The Goldilocks principal – lolololol (14 mins)
1:32:18 Sam Harris presupposes that that existence has meaning.
5 days have passed and I have watched this again but I just can't help shake the feeling this is no more than two leftist trying to determine the right amount of leftism.
7:53 I'd say the left did have an answer to Trump which was Bernie Sanders who beat Trump in every poll handily. The DNC had their plans and made sure to do undermine that and in thoroughly corrupt vein put in Hillary no matter what (Debbie Wasserman Schultz / Donna Brazile). I don't think there's dispute there.
It's unfortunate that Mr. Pinker seems to have attended the Woody Allen School of Public Speaking.
@57:34 "We were designed by evolution based on goals…"
It's disheartening to hear Sam say something so ignorant. Sam must know that evolution isn't teleological, so his sloppy language is all the more frustrating, since sloppy language often both evinces and begets sloppy thinking.
I love both these guys. And as much as Iove Sam Harris, Pinker seems to expose Sam's limits in thinking about AI. Perhaps Sam was just too wary of time to try to dive into any of Pinker's objections in detail; still, having listened to 90% of Sam's debates and discussions with others, this conjecture strikes me as unlikely. Sam is the guy who spent 2 hours trying to find a common definition of truth with Jordan Peterson. Either way, it would be interesting to hear Pinker debate someone who has written a book putting forward the case for fearing AI.
He's like.. noone interviewed me like they read the book… like Stephen Fry
right wingers right winging
What is human entropy: 3:55 "an evolved organism that doen's want to be eaten (but that) would rather keep it's flesh to itself"
1:30:35 that's the guy that got grilled by Dinesh D'Souza. D'Souza challenged him to give up his seat at Amherst college is he was so concerned about the illicit gains of white privilege
Antonio Damasio does not look well.
Steven Pinker does not get into arguments, he just drops truths at the other person
Apparently it's much harder than I'd have guessed to limit mic feedback (esp during the audience's questions).
1s and 0s? Quantum computing changes all of that…
Two of my most un-favorite (I don't want to call them scientists/intellectuals because they do a lot of disservice to science and reason) thinkers. I don't like them mainly because Nassim Taleb doesn't like them… Nassim Taleb is my most favorite and respectable thinker, philosopher, and intellectual out there.. next after him is Jordan Peterson.
At 1:37:00 the answer Sam Harris provides about identity politics and its manifestations across right vs. left…… this hits it EXACTLY on the head. The masquerading by the left as "finely-tuned morality" when it's not at all so, is what got us Trump. For those of us on the left, and don't want Trump, we need to figure out how to publicly excise from ourselves this insane over-emphasis on identity politics, for the benefit of society!
And for the right, that battle has been mostly already won: the racist/fascist right is a blip on the cultural screen. No one takes any of them seriously! They exist, but the law of diminishing returns is at play here… let's be practical, and realize that it's a better future where we socially manage a tiny, ridiculous minority, continually sanitized by public discourse, rather than eliminate this at ALL costs, in exchange for some tyrannical monster of our own creation.
That zinger/gotcha/hey-you-put-me-up-to-it response to the person who asked why Sam doesn't deal with the problems on the right was classic and expertly dealt. Bravo.
1.08 the Dow falls to zero, bring it on …
Ugh, that vegan was hard to listen to. Then you see him and he looks like a vegan.
Dodgeball is awesome
Harris has a really good view on AI. If the issue is 100 years away it doesn't really matter. Imagine we were forwarned of an alien invasion 100 years in advance. We'd need to start preparing NOW.
I agree with the few critiques here—- Peterson limits his definitions or expands them as it serves his intent. He is asked if he believes in god, and he says Well it depends on what you MEAN by god… but in another talks he speaks of god as if it were the most well understood thing among his followers, as if they all agree in what it is. Seme with so many other things…. I like hm better when he speaks of hierarchies, or biology and men and women… but he always smuggles some jesus into all of that. So he starts well enough,
He goes something like this: "We humans tend towards hierarchies and it is natural and unavoidable…. and similar to lobsters these are old old old biological systems which…. and so you can see how god is the ultimate representation of the maximum idea of what humasn are to be, and he sits atop of the pyramid and that eye on the money represents the …. because he archetypes of humanity have lasted… and the idea of god has lasted along with all that as we evolved into… and that is why men and woman have such natural different tendencies, because women represent the ultimate nature they choose who passes on their genes and so in a way they are god-like…"
If you read or listen to his stories about how he grew up and how sick he has been and is and his depression periods… most of these points he expresses are understandable under that light; because even now he hasn't overcome them, though now that he is famous and made some cash he is doing much better than before… which makes the point that success is the ultimate aphrodisiac, it cures everything. And the thing is that NOW he is so god-like to every one of his blind followers, that even if they read this and agree they won't say it, they will call ANY AND ALL critiques "attacks" and they take the high road and get on their high horse and say shit like "you just don't get it, you need more learning to understand it" just like people say it when you criticise Deepak Chopra, or Tony Robbins… they think any dissent is an "attack"… so they don't even think about what he says at all, they accept it all just as it is served, and if the serving is shit and doesn't taste good they think it is THEMSELVES that are at fault for not having a discriminating taste!! This happens ALSO with the many fears of letting go of religions in general. One good point about Peterson, From what's out there, he is better than MOST, though his conclusions leave a lot to desire.
I gotta say, I don't think these two guys get Nietzsche at all. They make the mistake of taking the aphorisms literally it seems.
Pinker misses the point regarding AI. His reasoning is based in the perspective of CURRENT systems, not ones that have self-altering capabilities that are outside our reach, in terms of testing and making sure they're safe ahead of time. (Think AIDS, cancer, or other diseases, which get and stay ahead of us for some time.) Harris is referring more about something that is more akin to a silicon/digital version of AIDS (but much worse, in terms of threat to the human species.) Pinker really needs to hear from more current AI researchers, as Harris suggests.
We have self driving busses in Edmonton, Alberta Canada now.
People like Pinker believe/say that A.I. is not a threat because 'engineers will do it safely'. However consider the harm that non-intelligent technologies like Facebook have caused, which simply were not foreseen when they were developed. The same goes for email (and the spam scourge that followed). Many technologies have developed a dark side that simply never could have been imagined when they were developed, because we can't see the future 100% clearly.
My fear with AI isn't that it will get too smart on its own. I think Pinker is right in saying it is extremely hard to make AI intelligent. What I worry about is a person or state purposely developing malevolent AI.

Steve: I'm a fan, but I must inform you that 1990 called, and they want their necktie with micro four-in-hand knot back.
Is it Sam whos making pinker a little nervousness or the crowd/situation?
This is why they are darlings of the RIGHT. Sam Harris, Steven Pinker, Jordan Peterson, and Bret Weinstein are no friends of the Left. They are anti-Islam, pro-biology, against gender constructs, pro-equal opportunity, anti-equity, Free speech absolutists, anti-Marxists. And they are white. They are NAZIS!!!!
Pinker is more accessible than Peterson. He does not use overtly philosophical linguistics which is barrier for those not educated in the subject – his target audience.
why why why do we keep talking about stuff others worry about….. give us facts….. give us new info…..give us something to really think about………. pls#
Hmmm. So climate change is a nearly existential threat to human existence but limited nuclear exchange between superpowers – short of all out nuclear war/winter – isn't really a threat to worry about. And most of the comments here seem to hold Pinker in very high regard. I love the notion of negativity bias as laid out in this discussion and certain other points are nothing if not supportable. But Pinker is equally nothing short of confused, deluded, ethically compromised or insane on certain other points. No one is right on every point. Based on this discussion Pinker's work should be evaluated with determined circumspection point by point. Nothing to fear from AI kids!
I'm going to suggest right now to anybody to stop saying well beans and making the claim or the effort to have a self pre surfaced definition
So I envision a library video library that is designed for ultimate on suffering and a sense that if you want to know how how to react how to practice good behavior YouTube videos would be good for that you guys offer yourselves and the same manner and you're not going to change your actually designed specifically sort of peace and if you were to change that piece they would just get another piece so the the task is to stay on point and convince and confused as many as you can but it's there is someone out there actually attempting to help get out of a bad situation then the only things we need his knowledge so everyone has come a long way with all the intellectual thoughts that we've been digesting are ingesting through with machines or hearings sound through these little machines and always sleep better if we can get a reaction because it'll help us keep importance of still being real sea cuz every since this technology has come out my life has on spirally downwards because my ultimate goal was to be a family-oriented and only control what I wanted and saw that was just a family Dollar SLI did not work after 3 years of being married the ease of telling someone to help me choose something in my life such as the importance of a child beyond me so women have the option to run to another person and claim they need help when they get it to him so I'm effort listen keeping a standard a standard so I didn't give up I simply just pressed pressed on and on my house leaves deja Vu things are happening and maybe that's because it's doctor collapse maybe I just think that if I'm interested in specific segments of this really really important knowledge without this is going to sound terrible but without the Bible so before and I still want to go to the Bible and the Bible has very specific ways and and so very well written words to help you self diagnose or some self evaluate situations and almost any situation that you find yourself in so if we had a video library database like that that you could choose just words or you could choose facials video expressions having someone tell it to the person like they're actually speak into them so it's going to get weird into virtual reality like that but I think that's important just cuz for no one that's ever heard that before and just to hear it one time could make such a differences and the impact say Jordan Peterson has on so many people is his pure heart that is open while he discusses and you can see with Sam Harris and his demeanor and he'll although he'sso I am resume library video library that is designed for ultimate on suffering and a sense that if you want to know how how to react how to practice good behavior I think a YouTube videos with the good to that you guys offer yourself and the sandman a and you're not going to change your actually designed specifically for a piece and if you was to change that piece they would just get another piece so the the task is just a on point and convince and confuses many as you can but it's there is someone out there actually attempting to help get out of a bad situations then the only thing we need his knowledge so everyone has come along way was all the intellectual thoughts that we've been suggesting her and Justin through witnesses or hearing center these little machines and always late better if we can get every action because they'll help us keep importance of it still being real because every since this technology is come out my life has on spa release downloads because my ultimate goal was to be family oriented and only control what I wanted and soul that was just a family that obviously did not work after through years of being married there so these of telling someone to help me meet choose something and my life such as the importance of the child is beyond me so women have the option to run to another person and claim they need help Brenda get it and so effort listens
