The Media Arts program focuses on interactivity and time-based art, with students employing mechanical, electrical, and digital media skills, elements of performance art, and critical thinking to produce their work.
First year students explore the role of media and digital technology in contemporary culture and its implications for making art. They are introduced to video, audio, motion graphics, and basic electronics, and acquire fundamental digital skills.
Second year students are introduced to digital media arts, discovering programming, web-based art, and patch-based programming, and are exposed to software applications, techniques, and digital media artists. They continue to acquire video, audio, and motion graphic production skills, as well as how to control a wide range of devices through sensors and triggers.
Third year students learn how to establish a personal practice and portfolio in media arts. As they deepen their understanding of sound art, video art, interactivity, computational art, and media production, they also explore artistic voice and point of view, constructing conscious, defined relationships with audiences, and examine the role and process of practice-led research to provide depth and context for artistic expression. Students gain an understanding of the roles each of these factors plays in defining a body of independently drive work rather than assignment-based production.
In fourth year, students learn how to establish artistic, conceptual, and technical style at a professional level, and undertake major research and media work that incorporates the tools, theory, and information acquired in previous courses. They produce shows, lead critiques, and conduct presentations and discussions that explore, evaluate and extrapolate from their own personal work and that of contemporary practitioners. As they build on the knowledge and skills developed in their previous years of study, fourth year students achieve the competencies and confidence for professional art practice.
