Parents of Murdered Parkland Student Joaquin Oliver on Using Art to Demand End to Gun Violence

https://democracynow.org – Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, return to class today, amid heavy security, after summer break. It was six months ago Tuesday when a former student, armed with a semiautomatic AR-15, gunned down 17 students, staff and teachers in just three minutes. It was one of the deadliest school shootings in U.S. history. After the horrific attack, many of the students who survived the shooting became leading activists for gun control. Among the students killed at Stoneman Douglas High School was Joaquin Oliver. On Tuesday, Democracy Now! spoke to Joaquin’s parents, Manuel and Patricia Oliver, who have started a new nonprofit called Change the Ref to promote the use of urban art and nonviolent creative confrontation to expose the disastrous effects of gun violence.

  1. No parent should ever have to bury their children. But the cowards who were supposed to protect his child (FBI, teachers, on site security guard) should be buried under the prison. Dana Loesch put this whole distraction to rest. Taking guns from law abiding citizens isn't the solution.

  2. They really think that they're making a difference by confronting the nra? Grow-up, you can not predict who will be the next mass killer in America by making gun laws.

  3. This is the sheriff and the FBI fault, not the fault of the “gun culture”. The logic used in this video is like blaming a fork for making you fat.

  4. I can say as a father myself that Manuel is wise and intelligent, full of love and compassion. Patricia is an awesome mother, the example for others. Joaquin was fortunate to be born into your family. Stay strong and keep fighting for the soul of our country. God bless you.

  5. Joaquin got it right. It is about background checks. At least in this case. His murderer was brain damaged. It was well known by many people, for many years. One gun seller even recognized that his motivation was wrong and refused to sell him a gun, it was that obvious. There must be a system in place that mandates background checks, at the very least.

In fact, because people go psychopathic for many reasons. An app can be put in place identifying people of concern. If someone were to be flagged, it's just a matter of passing the proper psychological assessment to get to buy a gun. It's hardly a solution. But it's much, much better than what is happening now. I have children just a little older and a little younger than Joaquin. I can't imagine the grief.

  6. Sorry for their loss. Chicago has had over 1400 shooting and more than 250 gun related homicides so far. So let’s get real about guns, violence and race in our country.

  7. What's so wrong with background checks and licensing? It's far easier to buy a gun than it is to drive a car and at the very least it should be as difficult.

  8. Are you implying that we should erase laws that make sense and work? Food safety laws are the kind of laws that need to be enforced, guns are a separate matter in it's self in my opinion. Unless you have some strange fetish for food parasites, and  in that case you can make your own home recipe, chow down and have at em cowboy, Congress need not be bother. But laws that are made based on the polls and studies of the so called elite or the minds of frightened people gave us Jim Crow. And laws based on an ability to read the complex human mind are the makings of a snake oil salesman. And the world isn't flat. Gun crimes have been committed by individuals with no history of violence. So should we disarm all Blacks because they're blacks now and won't bow down for the national anthem? Asians because they're Asians?  How's about Hispanics  because some elected guy says they're bad people and lazy?  Or maybe veterans because someone is afraid they'll snap?   Or do we use each ambulance chaser waiting to make a name for himself by staging  rallies with when another shooting happens in America? Screaming New Law! New Law! New Law! These hard liners promise safety, but produce no yield. Unless you're counting the hype from News Media, they're a propaganda machine for hire. And what do you tell yourself when it's Law Enforcement, or the government that commits these acts of violence? Are they making laws against themselves? How do they sleep at night?  So can you tell me with violence and deaths galore in America sense its founding why is the bleeding heart right deciding it's time to take control of guns? Putting guns in the hands of the so called elite. You can smell the hidden agenda flowing right up your nose just before the trains crash. And If Hitler were alive today he'd be applauding this effort to remove the peoples constitutional rights, he's staged a lot of fake news. So tell me just what power would that be of? Sounds like someone was brought-up a little more than rocky. [ Thank you Democracy Now for bring us this report ]

  9. I lost my wife and two daughters 4 and 6 years old to right wing paramilitary violence in Colombia in 1999. They were decapitated with chain saws because they might have been socialists. My heart goes out to these people in gringoland who lost their children. It will be a hole in their lives that will never be filled.

  10. this makes me cringe, just as much as seeing a guy ride the little mermaid with a proud NRA hat? how can you proud of wearing that? when your people killed teenagers day in and day out

  11. so the president ignores parents whose child was murdered by the nra? i am not suprised because what keeps his life up and his money is funding from the nra, if the nra leaves his side trump wont have money so why would he care if members were shooting up schools? stupid.
