Welcome to Art Theory in Disneyland where we take a look at the artistic impacts and influences of the happiest place on earth. This time we look at the changes to the iconic Auction Scene in Pirates, and maybe the fine art history which predicted it.

HEY trickster wasn't it inaccurate to begin with Pirates where not as brutal as royal navy who where the scum of the earth compared to pirates when things like killing and rape. Pirates where still defiantly dangerous but less then cruel exploitive colonies having imperial thugs.
You fool that’ll never work!!
And in conclusion, Pirates….gold….shipping.
Well, now I ship your "White Neurotic Mom" Character with Charlie's "Jim" character…. I hope your happy, Haley. I'd say you're more of a Scocial Justice Bard, educating us with guile and entertainment about why a problematic thing is problematic. As oppossed to the Angry and The Stupid (Cause in the end that's all they are) Calling for everyone's heads If there's even one slightest bit of misrepresentation.

My first reaction upon seeing this was "OMG another Disneyland art theory video!" My second was "oh great. On the pirates change. Because I haven't heard enough about that already." But then, true to form, you spoke more intelligently about it than I thought was possible, provided more historical context than I knew existed, explained exactly why it was OK with the 60s view of piracy and now it's not… And had some wonderful lines and humor thrown in. You make everyone else on the Internet look bad with how awesome you are, Haley. No offense to all your lovely friends.
"We say 'Yo ho!' but we don't say 'hoe,' cuz' hoe is disrespectful, yo!"
This is a fantastic essay keep up the great work can’t wait to see more.
I still miss Blackbeard on the ship. Don't get me wrong, Barbossa is a great character and I know why they made the changes but, I still miss him. At least they gave the Red Head a new job and didn't just take her out entirely.
11:27 Considering the typical diet of a pirate at sea (heck, any sailor of that age https://www.nationalgeographic.com/people-and-culture/food/the-plate/2014/08/19/eat-like-a-pirate/) apparently wasn't that far from Pirate!Spazz's "crackers and lint" line… yeah, I'd be raiding the larders and storehouses of a port any chance I got, too.
14:53 "Painted lady on the Wonka ride?" I didn't realize Small World was that much of an acid trip. 😉
This video was soooooo worth the wait, my God!!! As a fellow art historian, trying her best to finish her bachelors degree this year, sometimes I feel like this series was MADE for me.
I love to see the thought process behind it all and I cannot wait for more of this series, no matter how long we have to wait! I just… wow, it makes me wanna write my own thing.
Keep up the excellent work and I will be eagerly be awaiting for it 🙂
That was a really interesting angle. It's surprising a ride about bad people, and about the fact that they're bad people, but with humor, has lasted that long in the first place, really. Riding it as I was getting old enough to question it, I remember starting to wonder what the appeal of telling this story was to the point that you'd devote a whole attraction to it, taking time to focus on these sorts of scenes. Would I like it at all without the context of fond earlier memories of the ride?
And while it's kind of ridiculous that they're auctioning chickens, I do like Pirate Redhead.
Great video and thanks for the shout out! MORE LADY PIRATES!!!
Really good essay! I kinda thought the series was gonna be more "art theory 101", more in line with the artist statement video and more explicitly theory heavy, but this is nice too, because it was a very good video.
Social justice cleric is my new DND class. Great video!
HOW HAS THIS BEEN UP FOR MONTHS WITHOUT ME NOTICING?! GOOD VID! I LIKE!
I used to work at Pirates in WDW. Really enjoyed this video! ♥️
