I mean, I've had High School teachers start out teaching one thing, and switch to another after a few years, also, aren't the movies there own canon? Which I don't remember them ever saying anything about Merrythought in the movies

Lyall Lupin (Remus father) were a world-renowned expert on Non-Human Spirituous Apparitions, which included poltergeists and Boggarts. I thought it was the reason why he choose a Boggart.
Did it not come to your attention that she may have just been teaching at the school for nearly 50 years as in the movies the professors switch positions to keep it fresh for students?

It may also explain why Dumbledore became the only wizard that Voldemort ever feared. Clearly, Voldemort and Dumbledore have never duelled before and yet Voldemort seem to be sure that Dumbledore is at least his equal. The fact that Dumbledore became the only wizard to break his curse on the DADA post (a curse that Voldy have put a lot of magical skill and effort on given its potency) may have given him a powerful clue as to the power level he is going to deal with in Dumbledore.

In case you forgot, Dumbledore is not just a high school principal, he holds a couple of offices in the Ministry as well; besides, he also holds office in a couple International wizard organisation….?
1:35 he's not just a high school head master, he's the headmaster of the ONLY school for magical Britain, so going through school virtually every witch and wizard knows and respects him (except the mini death eaters of course) it's an extremely powerful position, not politically (though he already has political power in spades) but socially.
Entirely possible that for the 10 years where Voldy was "dead" the jinks could have lost its strength and Quarill (spelling?) Could have held that job. And yeah, switching between positions when you are strong in multiple area's doesn't seem at all unusual. Maybe one co-worker wants to take a year long sabbatical, maybe two teachers decide to switch for a few years to keep the job fresh. People bounce around in company positions in other careers so why not.

So I always assume that the only reason Quarl was there for more than one year was that Voldemort was with him the second year. The jinx didn't work because technically Voldemort was teaching the classes as well.
They could also be shuffling other teachers around. Snape held the position for a while.

2 teachers can teach a subject at once, transfiguration might be his main thing. Like often drama teachers have to teach english aswell if they dont have many classes
