Rising sea level will permanently alter coastlines and is perhaps the most profound long-term aspect of climate change affecting coastal communities everywhere, as well as the global economy. The phenomenon is often overshadowed by short-term flood events, though it will elevate those too. In this talk, oceanographer and author John Englander highlights some surprising scientific aspects of sea level rise, including the latest projections for the coming decades, eventually many meters above present.

It seems strange to me that an extensive study of 80yr old photos of the sea shore line compared to new photos (2000s) of the same shore line show no discernible difference…Why is that?
I also wonder why no one will talk about the huge impact industrial farming has on top soil disappearing and the effect of this – erotion and pollution on the water, as well as the many and huge damn projects going on right now. This has got to produce an array of new problems.
Sea level rise? How come the Obamas paid $15million for a waterfront property in summer 2019?
I could have sworn that sea levels have been rising for the last 8,000 years.
I have spent my life on the sea shore and so have many of my friends. What we do there is very dependent on the level of the ocean. In over 50 years we see no variation in the levels at any tide. Same rocky reef and the same rocks.
Get out of your lecture theatre. The aircon is affecting your mind.
how many gallons of fresh water do all the rivers dump into the ocean everyday ?
Lets divert this river water to areas we need it like reservoirs, farmland, and fish hatchery's. we could refill aquifers and turn deserts into farmland, forest area even cities.
Why doesnt the water in my cup of ice water spill over the edges and all over the table as the ice in it melts? Wouldnt the same physics apply when glaciers melts? The volume of water before and after melting is still the same, right? Youre saying the water in my cup should rise in volume and spill out as the ice melts like you say the ice caps will melt and rise over the land, but it doesnt, why not? please explain mr scientist. thank you from mr lament.
Archimedes principle. Sea level rise is against the laws of physics.
Then why isn’t ocean front property values declining.
The same people that want me to embrace the Evolution theory and not consider Creationism, also want me to be convinced of man caused global warming. Yea, Right! This hurts the esteem of The Royal Institute.
So despite all the rebellion and Thunberg publicity the greens still only got 1 seat in the UK election. What does that tell you that the media and the alarmists won’t admit? Meanwhile the Maldives and Tuvalu are still not under water, in fact the Saudis have just invested $9 billion into the Maldives for resorts and the Obamas have just bought a $15 million waterfront property.
Look deeper before you accept the mainstream media touted alarmism.
I wonder what the amount of ocean water displacement has happens with man-made material, erosion, river sediment, volcanic activity, etc.
Now imagine if we recut all the inland waterways from side ditches, ponds, creeks, lakes, rivers, etc. Move the displaced earth to fill in low lying areas.
4 to 1 likes vs dislikes. For a science presentation this is phenomenonally low. What? Why? This is an excellent talk with very valuable information. What is wrong with people?
Move away from the coast, IF it ever happens, which i highly doubt.
Now do a video on the psychology of denial. I find it amazing that when a doctor says someone needs coronary bypass surgery, the same people who deny climate change will willfully submit to having their sternums sawed open. Spoiler: CAD is a lifestyle disease which can easily be reversed without surgery. But I digress.
The melting of the glacier's is actually keeping sea levels down as it cools the Ocean thermal expansion will happen much more rapidly after all the Ice is gone. It is bad science not to realise this
Has this smart highly educated scientist ever heard of the decimal system? It always amazes me that Americans are completely oblivious of the existence of other countries on the one hand and the fact that they are the ONLY country in the world, except for two tiny backwaters, that use the ponderous unwieldy imperial metric system. I think the Royal Institution should force every presenter to give measurements in the decimal system as well.
According to half of the American population and the Republicans and the Trumpists, all funded profusely by fossilised fossil fuel interests, this Englander is part of a Democratic conspiracy against American industry and American freedom. The world is doomed thanks to the American Christian bigots who support Donald Trump no matter what instead of deporting him in a straight jacket to a loony bin where he belongs.
Consider two things. All of Earth land masses are a part of tectonic plates which are either adducting or subducting, and therefore always changing elevations. There is therefore no way to make a determination on what the mean mean tide is. Secondly where is all this rising water you speak of coming from? It is proven multiple times that it did not come from melting Arctic Ocean, Greenland ice cap or Antarctica or Southern Ocean.
39:40 not too astounding when you realize that they are providing hydro power to less than a 50k people. That's not a large draw as opposed to providing hydro power to several million, which most dams do.
Andrew Yang has the best plan for fighting climate change. The most thorough, realistic, achievable, taking everything into account, and growing the economy instead of hurting it.
https://www.yang2020.com/blog/climate-change/
His head will shine forever on the rising tide in a sea of stupidity. He is not the face of science.
I completely disagree. I want to know but he assumes it will only be viewed as negative or those who don't know won't care. Climate Change happens with or without humans or human activity. To view erosion of coast lines as only negative ignores the positive impact climate change can also have. If sucks if you own some region where a particular product that is produced and can only be called that particular product name if from that particular region due to the fact due to the present climate the region has perfect conditions for producing that particular product.
Yet, other regions will become those perfect places for perhaps the same or newer products. There will be economic winners and losers, but it is those who own the assets and own a monopoly of a particular perfect region now that are most opposed to 'climate change'. Other people other hand don't assume or feel like the speaker and yet are not some out of tune or uncaring person like he suggests, such as claiming those from "America" feel that way. All of that is a gross mis-characterization.
In the words of Greta Thunberg: "How dare you" mis-characterize how other's who don't support your globalist agenda through manipulating 'climate change' as a means to maintaining a hold on economic and social power might have legitimate reasons for calling out your agenda as BS.
Let's start with this, the whole 'carbon' build up is basically the use of Coal, and yet ask yourself if we knew all that, or most of it, when China was opened up and then seemed to adopt the worse of the 19th century industrial use of coal use and pollution why not focus on China since they are the largest polluters.
In fact, if Bernie Sanders were elected US President, the ideology that informs him demands we the US declare immediate war on China to cleanse them of the controlling ideology that demands they use such 'polluting' agents like Coal. What China needs is a Green New Deal. Maybe, we can nominate AOC as the next Secretary of State and master of propaganda for the State department.
Smartest and Finest Of the GOP are to follow in the comments… sticking their head in the sand and talking about “how stupid” these Dat Dare Scientists are!!! Same smarty pants that smoked their butts in High School and these future GOP’ers would try to cheat of off…. but now that those smarty pants have added another 8 years of college and 10 years of Study…….. “Dare Sooo Stupid!👍🤣😅”
What next? I suggest building on higher ground. That tends to work in most cases. The most effective solution to minimise the effects now, would be to use the politicians as a dam.
42:17 Ushuaia –> Osorno ?? Some kind of AI translator? And, Osorno does exist located north of Puerto Montt. Just try to make you laugh a couple of times.
LOL! I didn't realize that we could stop the seas from rising.
Condescending and boring
Global warming is
Climate change
Climate has been changing since the beginning of time.
One big volcano eruption and bingo global cooling.🤔
The most current prediction is 6 feet of sea level rise by 2100. The hyperbole regarding this “theory” is disconcerting. I saw a map today 1/25/2020 that shows the rise covering fifty miles of shoreline inland at the california/ oregon border ( where I live) at an altitude of 193 feet. Get real and stop trying to garner power by lies. The real risk in sea level rise is fear mongering.
LIARS. AND THAT IS BEING NICE. PEOPLE, WATCH EASTERBROOK'S ADDRESS TO THE US SENATE. END OF STORY.
Been standing on the same rock saltwater fishing for 20 years nothing changed
Every one of these talks misses two important points:
1) we don't need to save the planet. The planet will be fine. We need to save ourselves. We will be the ones that suffer.
2) stop bringing up politics. You're the reason it became a political partisan issue in the first place.
These arrogant losers amaze me. They never bring up the climate record over the past 1000, million and millions of years. The greatest easily proven climate warming was 1000 years ago. Well documented. Much much warmer than now and society flourished because of it. Twas the time of the Cathedral building and great prosperity because of crop production etc. And the liars never bring up the Sun cycles that are the greatest force affecting climate. But hey These losers get the gov't funding to scam more tax money out of the people. Increased CO2 causes more plant life by far. Which increases Oxygen levels. How do you think the dinosaurs got so big. Global warming, increased plant life (food) and oxygen. It was really high back then. And yes the coming solar minimum portends a coming mini ice age as has been regularly recorded. Postcards of people skating on the Thames back in the early 1800's. When everything was coal fired to boot.
CO2 dissolved in sea water is a problem we think less about. And not mentioned here. Sea life dissolving and dying.
