Rise of AI
What’s next for AI – The Quest for Advanced Intelligence
Today, Artificial intelligence (AI) can perform singular tasks, e.g., recognizing objects in images, transcribing speech or retrieving information from documents. Deep learning based on neural networks that simulate the working of the human brain and make a machine learn from examples has enabled the current AI to excel at these perception-based tasks, but most current AI systems operate as a ‘black box,’ with limited interaction capabilities, human context understanding, and explanations. These limitations have inspired the call for the next phase of AI research, which aims to create a sophisticated and unified “general AI method” – an AI that not only excels in separate tasks but navigates through the tasks, interacts between them to learn to understand the meaning and context. On an example of document processing and information extraction, we will explore why a more sophisticated AI is needed, how it differs from the current state of AI, and what challenges need to be overcome in the research of AI to progress to the next stage.
