Andy and Sean test out a variety of hydrogen balloons in the Ri Lecture Theatre – all in a day’s work when you’re preparing for the Christmas Lectures.

You can make this 'experiment' a lot more interesting if you combust different gasses (O2, different hydrocarbon gasses, etc) and by adding metal salts which give you atomic emission spectra to look at.
is not actually setting fire to hydrogen actually an implosion that happens ? O2 + 4H -> 2 H2O ? as 2 H2O has a higer densety than O2 and 4H ?
That would be awesome target practice for a bow and flaming arrow
It is!
But the University of Nottingham patented the match on a long stick.
Was the a girl, WITH A MUSTACHE?
awesome, i just uploaded one in slowmotion. They are certainly amazing!
The exciting thing about hydrogen balloons is that if the humidity is low, you can get static electricity sparks and they can blow up unexpectedly at any time.
nope. steam has lower-than-air density.
Add a bit more air, or better yet bottled oxygen, to make the reaction a little less fiery but more explosive.
0:49 that must've been scary
I did this by reacting zinc and and HCl in a conical flask, with a balloon
over the top
That's extremely dangerous: In some countries you couldn't use a camera, or mobile phones, or even just watches, in the same area.
WOW. i cannot do this experience since its too dangerous.
but now i can see it,thx. your way to explode hydrogen is safe too !
give u a like
Imagine how much power there would be if you added some pure oxygen with that hydrogen. You would need ear protection and a really long stick though.
Applause applause.
i make my own hydrogen and light it with my tesla coil 🙂
any gases that explode in color like green or blue ect? that i can make or get easy
Fill two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen, redo experiment, profit
Hi ! Quick question, 2H2 + O2
–> 2H2OSo water is formed but it is in a gas form due to the immense heat so the water is vapour that went up???
nice. cool trick.
The hydrogen hardly exploded, more like burned. Try filling the balloon with hydrogen and oxygen and then set it off. Better plug your ears.
Now imagine sitting ontop of a massive one travelling at 100 miles an hour…
Μαλαλ
This Kinda make you think. It's idiots like them that's responsible for rocketry failure, and explosions. Just to recieve a cool $6mil of the $3.5billion, stolen from our citizens who are breaking their backs for pennies. For $12 million experiments like this one. That shit is not even amazing, but U paid for it, so pretend ur amazed.
That clapping at the end triggered me.
now just add a firework fuse inside lite it and let it fly into the sky
Is it me or did anyone else see the letter l in the fire at 0:51
Well shit. I was looking up if hydrogen party balloons were feasible so we would not have to use helium, but apparently they might not be too good of an idea… Or maybe an amazing idea? Those fires seem to go out pretty quick, so would it be that huge of a fire hazard? I've seen normal balloons go up pretty badly, and that is because the balloon is burning, not the Helium. The Hydrogen seems to blast away the latex before it can ignite.
Ah well… I suppose party goers losing eyebrows would not go over well. Would be an awesome way to end a party though; detonate all the balloons.
What is it like to blow up a 8 ft hydrogen filled weather balloon ?
I'm planning to have a continuously re-filled tethered hydrogen balloon and I'm curious about the safety implications during launch.
Would it be strong enough to blow nearby windows from houses ?
Or maybe the oxygen wouldn't really mix quickly enough and this would be more of a deflagration than an explosion.
Why does the name HINDENBURG suddenly pop into my head.
What if you put a bottle inside a bottle inside another bottle, each filled with densified hydrogen gas, and the most-inner bottle having a solid chemical in it that can be set on fire using high-energy radiation?
This could behave like an exponentially growing explosion, but I'm now realizing that the burning reaction of hydrogen gas might actually result in a DECREASE in volume(therefore in pressure). Anybody with knowledge to confirm? I think I will need increasing volume in order to make such a bomb. Not that I'm looking to harm anyone or anything by such a bomb
It's pure science
สู้ๆครับพี่บี้ วิทยาศาสตร์ มันก็ต้องมีการ ผิดพลาด กันบ้างน่าาา
Cheaper easy to drive and smaller
balloon of hydrogen-2 time lighter than helium and much more cheaper) include in a balloon of Nitrogen (only 3% lighter than air but easy to confine and not much sensitive to heath in expansion) will prevent any fire of Hydrogen too
add few balloon of ammonia (2 time lighter than air) gas included in Nitrogen balloon
A small fridge compressor can be used to liquefied the ammonia this will make the balloon going down and opening the valve of compressed liquid ammonia will lift the balloon
This is in public domain if you do it offer me a beer LOLOLOL
I think you should let a message in the whole video telling that it is dangerious and should not be made at home
Try HHO mix. Much bigger bang.
I was also surprised when I saw the power of balloon filled with hydrogen-oxygen mixture
There is a problem here thats why this video is not right , hydrogen burns clear and doesn't "explode" it burns at a moderate speed
Boom 💥 boom 💥 boom 💥 try HHO 2 parts of hydrogen and 1 part of oxygen mixture inside the balloon 🎈 for some good 😊 results
science at its best
Hydrogen: poof…
Hydrogen oxide: KA-FRICKING-BANG!!!!!!
wait till ya see what it does under pressure
😱😱😂😂
