How do you go about designing a particle accelerator? Suzie Sheehy discusses how they work, what form they take, and what champagne means to an accelerator physicist.

The Large Hadron Collider at CERN has captured the imagination of the public. But particle accelerators take many shapes, and there are tens of thousands of other accelerators in use every day around the world.
Dr Suzie Sheehy designs particle accelerators. In this animation she leads us through the world of accelerators. They all share the same basic ingredients of an accelerator: particles, energy, control, collision and detection, and typically fall into three categories: linear, cyclotron and synchrotron.
The applications of accelerators range from individual medical care to answering the biggest questions we have about the universe. Each accelerator is the culmination of hundreds of people’s efforts, though the designs themselves often start with a single person’s idea.

That wasn't that bad, I'd recommend it.
The animation seems to have some major errors in it. Like using horseshoe magnets to "repel" a particle beam. And solar wind particle trajectories.
This is fantastic!!! Thank you
I never manage to find parties that involve women who design particle accelerators. Sigh; such is life…
The animations were incredible! I had to watch it twice, one time just observing the fabulous animations and illustrations and one time to listen to the content. Great video!
you go to wrong parties if after you say what an amazing job you have people run away.
awesome!
so if light was a particle wouldn't photons bend around earth instead of hitting us? i know it acts as both but lorenz field would suggest that it is not a charged particle even though it can act like one sometimes
This is Chef Juun from Food Wishes dot carm.
That was a great video! Very informative. Thanks 😀
This was amazing, thank you so much! A big thank you to Suzie for taking the time to participate and teach us plebs something very interesting 🙂
Great speech. But… was the graphics made specifically to fool people into thinking something that is completely wrong?
This is more of an overview than a how-to.
was that a young Einstein at the end there? nice touch!!!
the best animation ever!!!!
at 13 y.o. i made my first play machine to put my hair as a porcupine. Only 200 Kev. A waher machine motor, 2, 5 meters of PVC tube & a rubber band. It's an interesting experience for a child. The cost 4 a cyclotron was excesisive 4 my budget, i was very poor. Thanks very much, buy you can be more specific in ur explains. I was see one 10 Mev working in my university. Now i 65 & is too later 4 me. Buy i was learn very much about the caracteristicals of the matter. Thanks again
Such a fantastic animation! I'm completly in love with Suzie's voice <3
The whole time I was waiting for Mr. Plinkett to show up…
Can you blow it up so I can be the flash
Fantastic clear simple and entertaining explanation, thanks !
What about a particle accelerator in space who make use of earth magnetic field ?
I made one of these and it produced a black hole. My neighbor fell into it and hasn't been seen since.
Thank you to the wonderful contributor who translated this video into German! Vielen Dank!
If it explode it will make a darkmatter and it will create meta-human it will create the impossible
Great animation work
*slowly backs away
Can we become theflash
So you buy a bottle of champagne when the build process begins, let it age for twenty years, and then open it when the first beam is shot?
I hope nothing will go wrong if they ever activate the machine………..like if a person gets struck by lighting
Nuclear Physicists and Cosmologists may use beams of bare atomic nuclei stripped of electrons to investigate the structure
i really like this keep up the good work!
Excellent video.
Can you please tell me, which software you use to demonstrate this animation.
Yes, maybe with this knowledge we can shrink them….. Nano
I have heard a person who accidentally put his head in a particle accelerator and his left side is still young is it true.
If so can we use this to stay young and live for 5 to 6 centuries?
I get the physicist joke. Haha
This video is a waste of time for anybody who have watched it for legit purposes.
So, how to design a particle accelerator? No idea, I only seen a funky cartoon for 5 year olds.
Hi.
Just for fun, I was wondering if you could maybe give us an explanation of what type of components would be needed to create a Ghostbusters proton pack.
Not necessarily considering weight and size, but just what would be needed in terms of individual components, power requirement, and such…and what a real one might look like if a realistic proton pack was constructed with today's knowledge and technology.
What would the Ghostbusters need to do, to create an actual proton pack??
If you go to parties and guys back up when you tell them what you do…then you have to go to better parties. I would engage so hard if I found myself talking to a woman of science. Those guys are idiots
The word (How to design)? That is too simple
You didnt mention the third type…
Beam on beam action 🙂
what an interesting video! tks
Does anybody know the animation software used, or how I can recreate such animation? Like any tutorials or something? Thanks!!
Perfect for my kids thanks! However I still don't know how to build one at home 😀
please excuse this silly question, but when you accelerate a particle in a synchrotron, as it gets closer and closer to the speed of light, doesn't it take on mass?
And if so, wouldn't it's gravitational attractive force increase?
Please feel free to dismiss my question if it's ridiculous.
I actually want to make a particle accelerator
I went here to learn how to build my own can you do a separate episode on building your own.
