Life of Luba
GPT-3 is a computer program created by the privately held San Francisco startup OpenAI. It is a gigantic neural network, and as such, it is part of the deep learning segment of machine learning, which is itself a branch of the field of computer science known as artificial intelligence, or AI. The program is better than any prior program at producing lines of text that sound like they could have been written by a human.
The reason that such a breakthrough could be useful to companies is that it has great potential for automating tasks. GPT-3 can respond to any text that a person types into the computer with a new piece of text that is appropriate to the context
It showed us is how primitive much of the human output is… That 90% of what most humans do requires no creativity whatsoever.
We like to think that humans are uniquely creative, and that our creations cannot be matched at all, or could be matched, but only with a true general AI.
GPT-3 destroys this narrative… You can scoff at it and say that it’s a fairly simple algorithm that’s ‘just remixing existing information from the internet’. But the output is unquestionably impressive and better than the average output of the average person.
99% of the emails we send are boilerplate, 99% of the blog posts, taglines, and marketing copy are remixes. Even in printed literature, the majority is fluff, summaries and various forms of regurgitation.
There are many human endeavors that may require General AI to fully replace. But only a small number of individuals engage in such truly creative work, and even they do that maybe just a sliver of the time.
