Also, if you don’t have a saw- Home Depot and a lot of wood shops will cut the wood for you.
I’m glad you posted this! I get questions on my channel constantly about where I “bought” my sketch easel and I explain it is a “Gurney easel” and send them to your blog. I always try to avoid explaining how because I assumed that is proprietary to your tutorial you were selling. Thanks for this, James! 🙂
I wish somebody made these to sell. I don’t make things like this.
Stodoys plans has very good designs and plans.
I just discovered that the neodymium magnet link no longer links to an available product. Any ideas where to find this size magnet?
Sir where can I buy that sketch book holder I am from India
I just finished building my own and took it for a spin today! I love it!
Hi James, does the 24×24 plywood get cut in half so it will fold eventually? I will be getting the DVD but I want to know anyways! Thanks
Man, i cant describe the feeling a has for the people who make things to help another people… just want to say thanks! i'm a professional tattoer, but i really love the art of watercolour, and them bring me to tattoo world. so, now i want this tool to go to outside. cheers
How high do you need to set the easel while sketching or watercolor painting if your standing? Relative to your body. To be ergonomic and avoid back issues.
Where do I get the adjustable torque hinges and the quick release plates? I love his set up. I'm tried of bringing my oils supply for plein air painting.
That Gorilla glue is almost as good as any PVA (Polyvinyl Acetate – white glue) glue – it just costs a lot more and is more difficult to work with. The real shame is that you charge people to watch an hour long video for such a simple project. I suppose, though, that if you were a real artist with any talent you'd stop ripping off your fans and make liviing from selling your "art". Ya'll know what they say – those who do – do, and those who can't – teach. 😡
i've tried to link to the full tutorial provided here as well as one provided by jared loves to draw and both have the same message: ran out of time .. so …
I just watched the pay video, and it is very worthwhile. I am at least as technical about woodworking as James is about painting. Ouch, it is tough going for a woodworker. This is wood butchery, doesn't even know the names of the tools. But the positive is that if James can make this, anyone can.
There are a lot of expensive options out there, like the Strada. These are great, but they are mostly formatted as boxes, and yet, they basically don't hold anything. The sides on boxes make these things more difficult to make, and can reduce the functionality, because you run into the edges. The new 2 piece Strada shows how even they have stepped out of the format. Essentially, you only need the pallet and an easel. Not really a box. Try jamming all the paints and brushes James carries into an old pochade box, or having formats that actually accommodate the constantly changing array of choices.
So James wins. You can make these things out of a few pieces of ply and some hinges. Tinker away.
Fantastic, thank you.
question do you really need three torque hinges or can you use two?
actually a poor design. these hinges are not made to use this way,,,, one must cut a chunk out of the hinges (weaken) to get the contraption to reduce the 3-4 inch inch gap when closed. He is an incredible artist however $15 for a poor design and $20 for the two misused hinges is not so good.
One of your practices I really appreciate is your considerate, detailed, thorough listings and descriptions. In so many ways you're a model to us all. My wife is tired of me talking about how good you are and I think she is vigorously supporting me to go outside and paint.
What ever happened to those Clementoons that you made?
Foerstner bits will need to be ordered online. Most stores no longer sell them.
you are genius sir…. thank you for sharing this use full things…….
14th comment!
Its great!! But it needs more….
COWBELL
Have you ever watched The Jungle Book Movies? It’s my all time favorite story.
U r awesome great artist 👍👍👍
Very cool project! That 1/4" bit is a brad point bit–not a forstner–but either should work fine for this project!
Awesome stuff James!
great ..
If any students on here don’t have access to tools or history/friends with tools I’d be more than happy to cut the wood for you and ship it if you send me some scratch for shipping. Wood is pretty cheap. I have a compound miter that can snip it real fast and I wouldn’t want students to be held back by lack of access or tools. Granted everyone should own a drill and a saw at some point in their life 😉
