A Russian robot named Alex ‘predicted’ the victory of the French national team at Euro 2020, as seen in Perm, Sunday.

The neural network came to such a conclusion by analysing the qualifying matches and games played during the championship.

All players performances and even the coach’s career were also taken into account, according to Oleg Kivokurtsev, the development director of Promobot, the company behind Alex.

“We used more than 50 variables. And on the basis of this, we decided to guess who would be the winner. And our robot says with about 93 percent accuracy that it will be France. Of course, unfortunately, it’s impossible to give an accurate, one hundred percent forecast, because no matter what statistics, no matter how many variables, we still live in such a universe where chance decides,” he said.

As Kivokurtsev also mentioned, the neural network system combines various neural networks including Elon Musk’s GPT-3 presented a few months ago.

Reigning football world champions France has already beaten Germany, Hungary and Portugal during Euro 2020. On Monday, Didier Deschamps side faces Switzerland at the Arena National in Bucharest.

SOT Oleg Kivokurtsev, development Director of Promobot: “We analyzed more than 10 gigabytes of various football matches, analyzed the performance of each player of the championship, analyzed their violations, analyzed the coach’s career and, in general, we used more than 50 variables. And on the basis of this, we decided to guess who would be the winner. And our robot says with about 93 percent accuracy that it will be France. Of course, unfortunately, it’s impossible, to give an accurate, one hundred percent forecast, because no matter what statistics, no matter how many variables, we still live in such a universe where chance decides”.

SOT Oleg Kivokurtsev, development Director of Promobot: “This robot is characterized by the fact that it was made in the form of a supporting structure with the computing unit installed so that the robot can communicate and make calculations using neural networks and pedestal. On the pedestal, there is another computing unit, controllers and drivers which operate servomotors. Next, a frame is mounted on the pedestal. The frame consists of fixed legs, a movable torso, which has three levels of freedom of movement: it can move left, right, forward, backwards and diagonally. Here. Also, there is a camera installed in the torso. It allows to recognize people’s faces and, in accordance with this, detect and build a dialogue.”
