So this might be breaking some kind of rule, but you said that you were originally going to show it the whole screen. The problem was that it couldn't tell it's head from the rest of it. … So … Can't you just recode the game to color the lead pixel, say green or something? If you color code the head, and show the AI the whole screen, maybe that will help?
