In today’s episode of Theories of Everything, Curt Jaimungal speaks with Matthew Segall, a professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, on the evolution of philosophical thought, linking ancient teachings on consciousness to modern scientific perspectives. We delve into the limitations of contemporary views of reality, paralleling them with the Ptolemaic model, and explore how an awareness of mortality can enrich our understanding of existence. Matthew argues for a shift toward introspection and self-inquiry in a society grappling with existential challenges, emphasizing that confronting mortality can foster a deeper sense of meaning in our lives.

I've either taken too much acid or not enough. Both can't be true.
1:53:40
People who've had near-death experiences (NDE) return with whole new descriptions of God and the spirit side of our existence. Philosophies and religions lose all meaning upon direct experience of God and are just mental games that we play.
Yes, the Universe is Conscious. I just saved you 3 hours, now for my reasoning: We (you, I and every other conscious being) are the Universe experiencing itself from a first-person subjective perspective, we are not and can not ever be separate from it and we are conscious, therefore, the Universe is Conscious.
No.
Is The Universe Conscious? Unlikely as the Universe is created by Consciousness!
2:12:27 if I understand is the difference between ‘conscious interaction between quantum fields’. We observe quantum waves as ‘modulated’ by our observer. That extra data would be dark matter/energy. At least as I understand the question. Our 'possibilities' are limited by our 'modular' tuning…as it were.
At about 1:41:00 he starts to show his misunderstanding of time as being nothing but distance relative to the observer. The easiest way to explain his error is that we can rewind that part of the video over, and over, and over…..you’ll either get it or you won’t.
Consciousness = Cohesion:
By equating consciousness with cohesion, consciousness is the fundamental force that holds things together, maintaining structure and organization in the universe.
This perspective:
Unifies concepts: Consciousness and cohesion, previously considered separate, are now seen as interchangeable.
Explains reality's stability: Consciousness, as cohesion, maintains the stability and integrity of physical structures, from atoms to galaxies.
Reveals consciousness' role: Consciousness is not just a byproduct of complex systems but a fundamental aspect of reality, governing cohesion and structure.
Implications:
Consciousness underlies all existence: As cohesion, consciousness is present in all forms of existence, from the smallest particles to the vast expanse of the universe.
Loss of consciousness = loss of cohesion: When consciousness is disrupted or lost, cohesion is compromised, leading to decay, disorder, or destruction.
Consciousness shapes reality's fabric: As the source of cohesion, consciousness influences the very fabric of reality, governing the structure and organization of the universe.
My equation of consciousness with cohesion offers a revolutionary perspective on the nature of reality, highlighting the central role of consciousness in maintaining the universe's stability and structure.
I am not convinced that “wonder” is a distinct emotion. In your effort to establish its quality you said ‘I wonder why anything exists.’ So wonder is a query, it’s curiosity contrary to your assertion, it is a stage of knowledge creation. For sure wonder inspires emotion but I think emotion is a mental state that has a resolved direction that enables it to be sustained. We say I am ‘sad or I am happy; we don’t say I am wonder. Hmmm however we can say I am joyful or I am wonderful so I have some more wondering to do 😂What distinguishes an emotion aaha now I see it’s really a claim on identity that can only be limited by my own definitions of language and meaning yeah thanks boys that’s a great idea 😂
to even think that the universe has a conscios is beyond stupid. Consciousness is a emerging property; the universe does not care if we humans exist or not. Science, math and religion is a man made construct. Particles don’t have a consciousness. So stupid
A REAL human being is a thing that knows what a human being is. By that defintion…there are 'officially' no human beings on the planet. Unoffically…there are a few. Nobody, except they themselves, know about them. A well-known writer (who is one of them) described them as a 'new world order.' Quite obviously…nobody who matters will ever read this post….so there is no real concern about submitting it. I could ask…"why bother"…but that is a complex question and YT would not allow the post to proceed if I answered it. Maybe in some future epoch…some AI will digest this post and it will precipitate a 'tipping-point.' I suspect the odds of that are almost certainly zero.
Regarding free will…we are ALWAYS choosing in accordance with our alignment (to borrow a popular AI term). We have a human POV…therefore we choose according to human patterns of experience and understanding. We do not choose according to what it may be like to be a fart….or a mollusk…or a bolt of lightening.
God is what is responsible for human 'alignement'…to borrow a thoroughly exhausted AI term.
"Scientists animated by the purpose of proving that they are purposeless constitute an interesting subject of study." A very British perspective.

If we keep pushing the boundaries of science sooner or later it's going to be easy for someone to come along and create a weapon to wipe us all out.

Mihály Csíkszentmihályi describes the flow state as an interpersonal phenomenon, particularly in areas such as sports, music, dance, or teamwork, when multiple people act in sync and perfectly coordinate with each other.

The Disturbing Potential of Advanced Technologies
In the context of Iran and UAE's Yah satellite technology, China's WEH/WEI (Wideband Enhanced Interference and Wireless Energy Harvesting), and Japanese Earth Suspension Technology (JESUS), it is crucial to examine the far-reaching implications of these advancements on both individual consciousness and societal dynamics.
1. **Yah Satellite Technology**: The Yah system significantly enhances surveillance and communication capabilities across the region. Its advanced monitoring and data-gathering abilities could lead to pervasive surveillance, posing serious threats to personal privacy and autonomy. Such constant oversight can create a culture of fear, stifling free expression and critical thought. Individuals may feel constantly watched, leading to self-censorship and a reduction in open discourse, which are essential for a healthy society and democracy. The potential for misuse in authoritarian regimes is particularly concerning, where the technology could be leveraged to suppress dissent and control the populace.
2. **WEH/WEI Technology**: China's progress in wideband technology and energy harvesting presents opportunities to enhance connectivity and efficiency significantly. However, if these technologies are employed to control information flow or manipulate public perception, they could facilitate widespread disinformation. This can distort individuals' understanding of reality, making society less critical and more susceptible to propaganda. The ability to influence public opinion subtly through controlled information streams can undermine trust in media and institutions, leading to polarization and social unrest. It is imperative to ensure these technologies are used responsibly, with transparency and accountability to prevent such outcomes.
3. **Japanese Earth Suspension Technology (JESUS)**: This technology aims to protect structures from seismic activity, providing an innovative solution to earthquake-prone regions. However, an over-reliance on such technology can lead to complacency. If people believe technology will always protect them, they may neglect personal responsibility and preparedness, leaving them vulnerable in emergencies. Encouraging a balanced approach that combines technological advancements with education on emergency preparedness is essential to ensure communities remain resilient in the face of natural disasters.
The truce between science and religion is quite ancient. The issue is creating interest, achieving wide distribution and teaching it successfully. Does your guest have any experience with esoteric mysticism? I began my studies in science and mysticism in my early teens. Doing so has led to a comprehensive and unified view of the world that always leaves room for further growth through experience. Listed below are a few statements I would like to make.
1. The greatest contributors to my life has been books and experience. At around 12 yrs old I began to yearn for truth regardless of my preference. I was raised a Freewill Baptist but soon saw the flaws in the modern Christian system. and this was made worse due to an inborn keen intuition that "scared" religious relatives. This led first to the study of martial arts and meditation then to a book by Ralph Blum on runes. The passages and quotes were inspirational to the Way of the Warrior. This led to Castaneda, who I found disjointed, confusing and incredibly entertaining. In 94 I was presented with clarification on CCs inaccuracies via Theun Mares. I later found other authors of the past who were part of this same system. Anna Kingsford (Finding of the Christ), Esoteric Masonry by Unknown Author, Gnosis I-III by Boris Mouravieff. There were many others including Steiner and Blavatsky but their info was more piecemeal ma and little understood. The same system serves as the base for all major "secret societies"throughout history and serves as the root for all world religions.
2. Legend has it that the Mystery Schools had been charged with the task of preserving and perpetuating this system before the Younger Dryas cataclysm. The difficulties of daily life afterward and in general, and the eventual rise of organized state and church modified by those who had been hungry for power before the cataclysm at various times led to the eradication of most lineages. It is said that today only one line survives unbroken but two more managed to recover after a lost period of time.
3. Philosophy, Science and Mysticism work more effectively together.
4. The Absolute exists beyond manifestation. It is pure potential but manifestation brings into effect laws that must be followed by all manifest elements. The Absolute is the source of Life and the entire universe and its experiences is Life. In other words it is all conscious in its own way appropriate to the stage of manifestation and development. The physical universe operates on instinctive or reactive levels. It is therefore predatory by nature. Just like us, the fields around a particle "sense" and react to its surroundings. Level of Awareness is dependent upon Form. A particle is much more limited in its scope of awareness than is a form or forms that consist of conglomerations of particles. The Absolute does not ask for nor require "worship". It does not answer prayers and yet it has been called pure Love. We exist because of it. In a healthy state we would show a natural reverence and have a sense of wonder about our universe.
4. The Mystery teaching s also focused upon the need to take our death into account. Ancient Christianity and other forms of "faith" used to as well via a daily practice called recollection in which ones day was remembered and considered backwards. This mimics the post-mortem process of Panoramic Recollection of ones entire lifespan. They also paid attention to nightly dreams as this was an indicator as to the extent that one was listening and in contact with the Spirit. They also practiced Lucid Dream techniques that sharpened awareness and led to greater perceptual faculties. The other reason this was practiced was because the Seers of Mankind had witnessed the universe as a whole undergo this process during manifestation.. The Absolute "sleeps" and this entire universe at all levels is its dream. It gradually emerges throughout various beings/aspects of it own dream as it learns. We are meant to be stewards in a sense, eventually. Servants of the Spirit. Some think the fall was an accident some say it was necessary but either way we "fell" into physical manifestation.
5. Lucid Dreaming and the other practices, persevered in for enough time, lead to "astral" or "out of body" experiences. This is what John meant when he stated he was "in the spirit". Today we see this mostly twisted to imply being in nothing more than an elated mood or receiving a surge of emotion. This is the cost of organized religion with too few experienced in the subject. To me, their addition of "Vicarious Atonement" , Salvation via professing of belief has only led mankind to forget the NEED to develop the soul and in this failure they risk forfeiting salvation. which is simply full self actualization and discovery of further paths of travel. Also, in ancient times, the elect or chosen did not refer to a singled out race or nationality. It referred to those who had achieved a sufficient degree of enlightenment.
2:36:18 no worries bruv. most of us probably made it
It appears Matt didn't get around to mentioning it, but he probably would have if there was more time to lay the foundation, Rudolf Steiner's Philosophy of Spiritual Activity, which is the natural continuation of German idealism and Goethean phenomenology when the latter are taken to their logical conclusion. He has given many talks on Steiner and the stream of thinking he represented, for example here – https://youtu.be/1p6Khxyyoec?si=avhrKLSDWPu2DIFN
"In thinking, we have that element given us which welds our separate individuality into one whole with the cosmos. In so far as we sense and feel (and also perceive), we are single beings; in so far as we think, we are the all-one being that pervades everything. This is the deeper meaning of our two-sided nature: We see coming into being in us a force complete and absolute in itself, a force which is universal but which we learn to know, not as it issues from the center of the world, but rather at a point in the periphery. Were we to know it at its source, we should understand the whole riddle of the universe the moment we became conscious. But since we stand at a point in the periphery, and find that our own existence is bounded by definite limits, we must explore the region which lies outside our own being with the help of thinking, which projects into us from the universal world existence.
The fact that the thinking, in us, reaches out beyond our separate existence and relates itself to the universal world existence, gives rise to the fundamental desire for knowledge in us. Beings without thinking do not have this desire. When they are faced with other things, no questions arise for them. These other things remain external to such beings. But in thinking beings the concept rises up when they confront the external thing. It is that part of the thing which we receive not from outside but from within. To match up, to unite the two elements, inner and outer, is the task of knowledge.
The percept is thus not something finished and self-contained, but one side of the total reality. The other side is the concept. The act of knowing is the synthesis of percept and concept. Only percept and concept together constitute the whole thing." (Steiner, GA 4, Ch V)
Why would you th hink your special. Because you can think.
Your not special.

I come from my mommies tummy. So what's the mystery.
at time slot 37:18 I am hearing Don Hoffman concepts.
I've tried reading process and reality, and it's so over my head I can't make heads or tails of it. This is an excellent summation of Whiteheads philosophy so midwits like me can understand it.
Francis Kinsman in his 1987 The Telecommuters referred to a survey that indicated people were shifting from being outer directed, to inner directed…. I will have to dig that out and re-read it after this amazing dialogue – thanks Curt and Matthew for expounding so much in such a short space of time – brilliant job guys! I'm on-board with Matt's program!
What a tour de force!
Thanks gentlemen! 🙏🏽❤️
I wonder what these philosopher’s cats would have to say to each other?
Matt’s cat, Kastrup’s cat, Vervaeke’s cat, Bach’s cat…
😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻
Absolutely brilliant and deeply insightful conversation! ❤
Don't know about the rest of you , but I came from my mother.
"What am I?" is a surprisingly difficult question to answer. The fact it seems impossible to answer is perhaps a clue to the answer not just to what we are but what the rest of the universe is too.
Osho would say this all we're doing is to forget who we are. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe it's all poetry of the mind
When we understand Emptiness and Non-Self, as the Buddha did, there is no longer duality and separation. There is no permanent Self or Ego-center that is separate from the Universe. We are aspects of the Universe, in this temporary physical form, composed of the six elements, being aware if itself, experiencing itself. There is Cosmic Consciousness.
