A Semiotic Analysis of Book Covers: The Fortunes

MCS-books

A video essay in which I analyse the cover design of a book. Using the Pericean semiotic theory, I break down all the images and icons that cover designers have used to express the story inside. This is my personal interpretation of the images and their subsequent meanings which could allude to the themes and styles of the novel.

I hope you enjoy the video; don’t forget to comment with your own thoughts and interpretations of this cover. What do you think this book will be like?

  1. This is so cool, it’s such a neat concept! It really makes me consider covers a little more and what they can convey. I think having an artistic touch to the cover really adds to a books substance 🙂 I’m a new subscriber so forgive me if you’ve done videos on this before, but I’d be interested in hearing your opinion on covers of multiple types of genres and decades, for examples Neil Gaimans remade American Gods cover with Robert E McGinnis. I know you’re not an art historian (lol or are you?) but it’d be cool to see what you think about different artists perspectives on the same book.

  2. Wow this is so cool! I’ve never heard of analyzing a cover this way but it makes so much sense to me. I think we all tend to do it to some extent subconsciously. Covers are usually what initially attract me to a book anyway. And this would’ve been one I would have picked up to examine because like you, I am very interested in Asian culture. It’s pretty cool that you lived in Hong Kong for 4 years! Looking forward to knowing what you’ve thought of this read later on.

  3. This is such a great discussion! I don't think I have ever truly thought about a book cover as indepth as you have here. I can't wait to see more of these from you!
