Acrylic Painting Demo – "Lavender Fields"

Karen Ilari

This is an acrylic painting demo for the beginning or intermediate painter. I’ve chosen high quality but simple materials to make starting out more economical.

It’s great for the beginner because I’m using a very limited palette of paints from the Golden acrylics “introductory set” which includes the colors below.

Titanium White
Hansa Yellow Light
Napthol Red Light
Permanent Green Light
Ultramarine Blue
Mars Black

This limited palette makes color mixing easier to understand and practice.

I’ve used 4 brushes: a 1/2″ flat synthetic, a #2 round bristle, a #2 filbert and a liner brush. Again, to keep it simple and keep costs down.

I painted this using one of my Plein Air (on location) pieces as reference. Using the finished painting as a reference instead of a photo is great for the beginning painter and helps to focus on developing your craft and skills in brushwork and color mixing.

  1. I love these paintings and you have a lot of useful knowledge however, as a beginner, it’s essential for you to explain what you’re doing as you do along. I’d love a slower video with more detail.

  2. Karen do you use a natural hog or synthetic bristle round brush for your rolling technique? What brand do you use also? I use a flat natural bristle to do most of my blending but after watching you I want to try the round brush. Love the effects you achieve.

  3. I have found a way to extend the life of your acrylic paint and this is something I dicovered purely by accident. I find that if you mix a little amounts of hand sanitizer with aloe moisturizing in it will really help you blend and extend the life of your acrylic paint. Love your painting and teaching methods .. 😀

  4. wow you are right up my alley! you keep the teachings very simple, not overly-detailed. a lot of it is also because my friend taught me how to do landscapes in oil. i want to try acrylic though because oils are so messy, time consuming and expensive.

  5. tout y est pour moi à l excellence. travail des couleurs sur la palette, nuances et touches au pinceau, montée du tableau, delicatesse des tons, visibilité de la demo. .. rarement sur internet une si belle démonstration. merci beaucoup.

  6. I think one of the biggest myths in art is that anyone can do it. Another is that rules are made to be broken — few do and those that do are always criticized, besides there are no rules in art. My motto; Make Bad Art.

  7. Thank you so much for your painting demo, Karen !! I've learned a lot through your kind explanations and they will be very helpful when I start to paint !!! Your voice is a great gift from God !!

  8. Loved this video by Karen. I have never watched her before so this was such a delight to find online! Karen explained how to mix paints using a minimum number of colors o her palette and it was simply amazing to see how many various colors she obtained from just a few tubes of paint! Lavender Fields is stunning and I cannot wait until tomorrow so that I may paint this gorgeous scene along with Karen! I consider myself an intermediate painter, yet I found her tips and explanations very useful! Thank you for such well done instructional video of a subject that demands to be painted!
