An "anatomically correct" Scarlett Johansson robot

Quartz

Ricky Ma has no formal training in robotics. He spent three years and $50,000 building a robotic Scarlett Johansson.

Ricky is a graphic designer from Hong Kong. With no formal training in robotics, he spent three years building “Mark One,” an extremely lifelike robot that looks exactly like Scarlett Johansson, out of hardware store supplies. Oh, and it’s not a sex robot.

This video is part of Machines With Brains, a series about what it means to be human in a world that’s increasingly filled with robots.

  1. Ah yes. HUGE market for anatomically correct robots that you buy for scintillating, yet grammatically incorrect, conversation. The nipples must be temperature sensors so she can opine on how cold it is.

  2. He is a creeper, a guenious, but still a creeper! Lol. Got to give credit where creidit is due. He did a great job

  3. I smell ex machina, you people with high IQs tell me this if we make robots to do the jobs of others tell me what do we need humans for. I know for the rich to oppress and exterminate the poor. Than the robots will think about how humans treat each other and exterminate all humans.

  4. Don't know why everyone is so impressed while its true he has no formal training in Robotics as an Animator he would have the desirable related transferable skills. For example Animators study motion and gestures, you can see him perfecting them with "Scarlet". There is no difference between the way he would animate objects and people vs what's in the real world. Same thing different just different form. Point is anyone with passion, the time and proficient level of transferable skills can do anything. If it was a farmer that's never seen a computer before then yes, otherwise this man already had all the know how or knew where to source it.

  5. You have to be careful using the image of a celebrity in something like this because if they got a trademark on their face, then they could sue you if you used it without their permission. IIRC, Abyss Creations over in California that makes the Realdolls won't make any that look like a celebrity unless they have a signed release from him or her. They might make a custom doll face for a customer, but it can only somewhat resemble what a celebrity's actual face looks like and not be exact.

As far as Ricky Ma's robot Scarlett Johansson is concerned, he obviously put a lot of work and money into it and the results are impressive. But, he and the rest of roboticists still have a long way to go before they can produce a fully autonomous, free standing and walking, Mr. Data type android that can reliably carry out commands that it is given. The programming for all of that will be far beyond what we do now and will require a miniturized super computer to process in order to work the robot's body.

I won't say it's impossible though and we may actually have something like that by the middle of this century. Then there will be the question of whether or not those machines are actually conscious and have feeling like humans do. If so, then that gets us into the discussion of whether or not they have any legal rights of their own or are they strictly the property of their owners who can do what they want with them. These issues could take years to settle.

  6. Scarlett Johannsenn, as she is in real life: cyborg mentality that makes human beings expendable, zero emotional content, zero empathy, body parts made from the finest plastics money can buy, and does the term "artificial intelligence" have special meaning to anyone? Truly Scarlett represents women in film, as represented by this cyborg copy.

  7. Serious question: is something like this legal? I know it’s a backyard project for him, but would there be grounds for legal action? I ask because Scarlett Johansson is an actual person, so she would have rights to her likeness (?)? Especially if he tried to make this project a publicly available thing. I have no idea if any of that made sense.

Second, I can’t even imagine what Scarlett Johansson would say if she saw this. I know if it was me, I’d be terrified. It would feel like I was artificially kidnapped if that makes sense at all.

  8. Like anyone that has a life size Doll. Weirdos,n lost, weak, and lonely pitiful people. Its sad. Find a real person to be with not a fn doll lmao wow
