Are We Living in a Simulation?

In science fiction, stories about simulated realities are commonplace. Writers and filmmakers delight in the chance to rattle our notions of reality and perception. Even Kurt Vonnegut toyed with the idea in his novel, Breakfast of Champions. But to Nick Bostrom, a philosopher and co-founder of the World Transhumanist Association, simulated realities are more than just a provocative thought experiment. In fact, he believes it is more than likely that we are all part of one right now.

  1. If YOU were the on the design team who developed the simulation, would you encode clues that intelligent beings in the matrix could prove it beyond a reasonable doubt? And if that were done, what might happen next????

  2. Meaning that god is real
    He fucking trolled us
He showed himself in the Egyptian times as simulations of himself

The earth might not be many millions years old
    It's just a simulation

  3. Even if we are and if we could prove that we are, it would have no bearing on our lives. You'd still get up on a Monday morning to go to work etc. In this way these discussions seem childish.

  4. So it is quite possible that I am a SIM. Well, whoever is controlling me, could you please make me wealthy and sexually fulfilled?

  5. Consider that we are building machines that can learn and understand our reality. AI will one day be perceiving the world, and so if a simulation is integrated or run within such a system then the simulation too could perceive the outside world, no?

  6. This could be a simulation, but the video is too far off any good examples of why, and how. It is way off its own topic so i gave it a thumbs down even though I came up with the idea in 1995.

  7. There are more than 3 possible outcomes, what if we are the first universe that creates the first set of simulations? (Arguably much less probable than other options, but possible nonetheless)

  8. hi i have a question , I was thinking, wouldn't spooky action at distance prove where in assimilation, all objects would be at the same distance In simulation therefore Einstein speed of light would not be broken, information would not have to go faster thin speed of light ,nothing can go faster Think of being in a game and you see the distance far off in the back, but monitors on the 2 inches wide Everythin will be at the same distance ?And that would explain spooky action at a distance ?

  9. A Lot of people think that if we do in fact live into a simulation. Somehow this reality is no real. No it's not. Even if we do live in a simulation – our reality and our programmer's reality will be the same reality and it's going to be 100% real. And here's why.

You might think that a PC game is not real… But that assumption is wrong, because a PC game is stored in a DVD disk, or a computer's hard drive disk or a usb stick etc… It is therefore made by real stuff. Real atoms. Every time you save the 'game' all you are doing is that you rearrange the positions of those particles. Just because these particles are so very tiny to the point where you can't see them – doesn't mean that they don't exist at all.

Therefore a PC game is as real as our reality is. The same logic has to apply to our potential simulated universe.

  10. I doubt we are in a simulation but IF it makes sense to formulate us as one I think the most likely scenario is a form of Vast Distance Simulation. It's not unreasonable to assume telescopes of the future will construct/simulate 3 dimensional models of what they are looking at. They will take in factual data (via light and gravity) and then fill in the "pixelated" gaps based on all known physical law, planet formation, galaxy formation etc. and create a 3 dimensional assumption as to what they thought they were looking at in detail. This could be done in a quantum-like parallel and creatures viewing what their telescope was observing/modeling from the outside would put a probability across the parallel of earths as the most likely fit for what the natural earth (or whatever they were looking at) was. This would also answer the fermi-paradox…where are they? We may exist in their telescope.

  11. The obvious flaw in the logic of a super-race being motivated to create "ancestor simulations" is that no one does that with today's super-computing capacity. We simulate reality to predict the future, not to emulate the past. We model the weather to predict the future. We model nuclear explosions to predict the future.

Any sufficiently advanced civilization would never waste its computer time on trivial pursuits. It would model its planet, as we are trying to do, its solar system, and assuming a long-term plan, to the cosmos. Why? In order to survive, which is exactly why we do it today. Extrapolating, the idea of a simulated universe rests on motive, and the hypothesis missed that massively.

  12. Scientists in all fields come up with many theories and possibilities and even belief sets they're willing to give credence to, no matter how unfathomable and unprovable, yet the one theory they flat out refuse to merit is the concept of God. That seems suspiciously more biased than a theistic viewpoint. Or at least equally lacking. The only thing more harmful than ignorance is willful ignorance.

  13. It's interesting that we may exist in a computer simulation with a grand programmer which
may be another addition to the many existing theories for the origins of the universe and evolution by some of some of the most vocal proponent such as Krauss , DeGrasse , Dawkins and of course Nye the unscientific guy. They have all shown an interest in it.
At the Isaac Asimov Debate which was hosted by Neil DeGrasse , the main topic was are we living in a computer simulation. There were 5 or 6 theoretical physicists , cosmologists and physicists on the panel and after a couple of hours they were asked what they thought the possibility was of us living in a simulation and their answers ranged from zero up to 60%
percent , with Neil being at the top.
I think this is a wonderful thesis to expound on , we can blame the computer programmer for
our incredible and intentional lack of understanding with the mountains of scientific data against the origin of the universe and the evolution of live.
How else could we explain how we have so little evidence for either , but expound both in many cases as a scientific fact.
We can just blame this master program creator for programming these simulated scientists to not recognize all the data against and still use mainly speculation as evidence and then convince others of the nonsense .
This does start to sound similar to a creator (computer program creator)?

  14. All arguments of how or why we came to be are moot if we kill ourselves off as a species within a couple centuries. Our situation at this point is rather like a passenger on the rapidly sinking Titanic wondering if it's ethical to eat the last piece of cake before it slides off the serving table onto the tilting floor…

  15. The simulation rules are reproduction of all species held together by "love", with emotion like greed, jealousy, competition, adventure, desire to explore and need to know added in. The simulation is run just with these few constructs.
