ArtiFact #34: A Climate Activist Dissects Ted Kaczynski's Manifesto | Arnold Schroder, Alex Sheremet

automachination

After embarking on a two-decade terrorist campaign of mail bombs, Ted Kaczynski forced the Washington Post to publish “Industrial Society And Its Future”, or, the Unabomber Manifesto, in 1995. This was an infamous tract on climate change as well as on the philosophical and pragmatic ramifications of accelerating technology.

In ArtiFact #34, Alex Sheremet is joined by radical climate activist Arnold Schroder of the Fight Like An Animal podcast to discuss “The Industrial Society And Its Future”. They tackle Ted Kaczynski’s claims about Leftism and political psychology, his time frame for ecological collapse, his use and misuse of terms such as “freedom”, and more. In assessing the Unabomber manifesto, they conclude that while Ted Kaczynski is often labeled insane or a genius, he is in fact neither. Rather, he is very much within his milieu, as well as a statistically likely end-product of his times.

  2. Big fan of Arnold, happy to see him on this channel. As much as I like seeing him and Varn riff, I do think there’s a Left-skeptical (or perhaps Left/Right-skeptical) and cosmically-oriented side to Fight Like an Animal that his previous collabs/interviews haven’t been able to capture.

  3. very interesting discussion. on the topic of somehow synthesizing the 'right and left' orientations, i do wonder how much friction we would be willing to accept. or, the right and the left are not going anywhere, some kind of perfect unity or balance isnt going to happen. is there a world where some level of balance is achieved and the fact that it's not perfect is acknowledged as part of the 'solution'?

then i wonder, do we already have that? we seem to constantly frame the world as total self destructive chaos and nothing is being done, but as arnold said, unless the left or the right imagines completely wiping out the other, we have to somehow 'get along'. and that means that if you're trying to create a better world somehow, it has to include these seemingly incompatible orientations.

ive yet to hear anyone articulate any sort of 'enlightened centrist' view that wasnt powerfully naive, but it would be amazing if somehow someone could. what i actually expect is that people will continue to segregate based on political frames and eventually entire states will break away and declare themselves left or rightistan.
