The Spirit Machine
Created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) artist Jeroen van Der Most, The Spirit Machine is an interactive art exhibit at Radboud University in Nijmegen, Netherlands.
Working with a team including Gabrielle Ras, PhD candidate at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, The Spirit Machine was built to usher in the opening of the university’s Maria Montessori Building, named after the famed educator.
Using a technology called GPT-3, Jeroen was able to train the computer to understand Montessori’s sentiment and syntax and use the knowledge to create “new” quotes that Montessori might say today.
Our team at Oat Foundry was so inspired by this work, that we wanted to give it a home on our Split Flap display. This marks the first time messages have been displayed on a Split Flap written entirely by Artificial Intelligence.
