Artificial Intelligence vs. Intelligence Amplification
After Deep-Blue won a chess match against the world champion Gary Kasparov in 1997, a questions was heard around the world: “Artificial Intelligence, are we there yet?”
Sixteen years later, the answer is still not clear. On the one hand we have impressive achievements such as Google Translate, IBM’s Watson and DARPA’s Urban Challenge. On the other hand, a common response to these achievements is: these tools are great, but all of the intelligence is in the human using the computer, not in the computer.
I propose replacing the question “can computers be intelligent?” with the question “can machines be conscious?” and follow some of the answers that have been given to this question over the last century.
