Aware: Glimpses of Consciousness

YouTube Movies

What is consciousness? Is it in all living beings? Why are we predisposed for mystical experience? And what happens when we die? With haunting cinematography, AWARE follows six of the world’s most brilliant researchers approaching the most mysterious of enigmas, consciousness, from radically different perspectives, from within and without: through high-tech brain research and Eastern meditation, by scientifically exploring inner space through psychedelic substances and delving deep into the consciousness of plants. Scientists are arriving at new insights – some which have been integral to Indigenous knowledge for millenia.

  1. Consciousness does not arise from the "gray goo" of the brain. It's the other way around: that grotesque and hideous mass of wrinkled gray "matter" is a just a representation of consciousness to consciousness at a certain juncture in the history of the phenomenology of consciousness, now that human consciousness has arrived at a state in its mental development when matter is assumed to be the metaphysical hypokeimenon, and consciousness is presumably derived from the physical substrate of reality.

In other words, the brain is a (mental) icon, an image, a cipher representing the way the mind appears to awareness when its status has been so degraded and debased – from being metaphysically fundamental, to a mere epiphenomenon of matter – that all that consciousness can see as itself when it looks into this distorting mirror – in comparison to the putative sea of physical "reality" (or consensus reality) surrounding it – is a repulsive, shriveled, oversized walnut.

Trying to find the mind by dissecting and analyzing the brain is like trying to find the self by pressing one's face into the reflected image of one's face in a glass mirror.

  2. This film is a rare gift to be watched by anyone who is curious about themselves, consciousness, meditation, or psychedelics. The filmmakers masterfully weave together the rational into the intuitive, science into psychedelics and meditation, and a structured exploration of these deep questions into the poetry of majestic visuals, rare stories, and wisdom-imbued transitions and juxtapositions. There is a maturity and depth that the film arrives at by the end which is a very unusual offering. Feast at the table of this film, and enjoy your evening.

  3. If you loved this as much as I did I highly recommend the Netflix show Sense8. It's kind of wacky and cheesy but its about all the same things. Really beautiful.

  4. OK, nice docutoon. Since I reduced time spent on cartoons to the trailers, I've found them much more enjoyable. On what this one is on about sea any talk by Mark Solms on the topic. For that reason and others only watched about 3/4 of this trailer to be offended at the stupid.
