I see one big issue here: the method seems to ignore scale, so when zooming out of the object the "sparkles" stay the same size, looking like they increase in size relative to the object, which is not how , for example, flakes in a car paint would behave in reality.
Other than that: we need that in all real-time engines ASAP 🙂

I'm always wondering if all these papers get to be incorporated in popular 3d software. I see Blender in this video for example. Would it be possible to use the technique with it?
Can this effect be achieved by altering the surface normal with a voronoi cell texture?
