BS: Defining, Detecting, Disposing | John Petrocelli | TEDxUniversityofNevada

BS’ing (communicating with little to no regard for truth, established knowledge, or evidence) is a major problem polluting our communicative climate. Based on empirical research, John Petrocelli discusses the consequences of BS and how understanding its causes sheds light on detection of this pollutant in our interpersonal atmosphere. John proposes that people begin to reduce BS by calling BS more often and applying five basic rules for dealing with BS. John V. Petrocelli is currently the Scott Family Faculty Associate Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychology at Wake Forest University. He is an experimental social psychologist with a Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington; he obtained his undergraduate degree from Westminster College in New Wilmington, PA. Petrocelli has taught social psychology, statistics, and judgment and decision making courses at Wake Forest University since 2007, where he also serves as Chairperson of the university’s Institutional Review Board. Petrocelli has authored or coauthored over 50 scholarly articles and book chapters in the areas of social cognition and judgment and decision making. His primary research interests and contributions are in the areas of BS’ing, counterfactual thinking, metacognition, attitude strength and persuasion. Petrocelli also serves as an Associate Editor for the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

  1. This is… just awesome… im not talking about this talk… im talking about the fact that youtube is showing me a frame of an anime instead of the ted talk xD its so weird to hear the guy and see the anime.

  2. I don't understand why the audience is laughing all the time.
A suggestion to the speaker: as a woman I would love it if you could say 'he or she' or 'they' instead of he. Men are not default people on this planet.

  3. I'm NOT a prude or a Bible-thumper; but there is an appropriate time and/or place for that sort of language. Using the full phrase once at the very start of his talk just to make his point in a very emphatic way (may) have been acceptable, but to continue using it just for the snickers that (he knew he would get) was trite and served no further purpose other than detract from the message he was attempting to send!!!

Using the appropriate two initials would have been sufficient!

That is not something that I would expect to hear from a TED speaker. My appreciation of TED just dropped quite a bit.

  4. So basically… leftists, SJW's, mainstream media, academia, climate change ideologues, and deep state bureaucrats who depend on a political business model of societal dysfunction, to keep their cushy jobs and pensions, while throwing the rest of society and especially the youth, under the bus.

  5. HI MY NAME IS MICHEAL AND IM FEELING HONORED AND PRIVELEGED TO BE OF SERVICE TO ALL OF YOU-NO BS! STILL WAITING ON THAT CREDIT CARD THEY PROMISED, BUT WHEN HAVE WE EVER KNOW DA GOVERNMENT TO BE QUICK AT NE TING N I DONT HAVE MUCH ROOM TO TALK… IM DEFINATELY PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS CAUSE!! AS YOU WILL SEE… TAKE CARE AND PLEASE SUPPORT ONES WITH CALLINGS… THANK YOU YOUR NOT SO HUMBLE SERVANT/FRIEND ?

  6. Great job on this talk! Understanding the cognitive biases that affect our ability to have honest, productive, or realistic communications with one another is so important, and understanding the essence of what of constitutes BS (scientifically) is just one component of that. I've never thought about BS in this way before, or the difference between BS and lying. Would love to see more published work on this topic.

  7. It's all about story. Once humans organize beliefs into a story, it's next to impossible to dislodge them. It's biological destiny. Good luck, sir. I wish you well.

  8. Just love so many speakers who challenge and give wonderful ideas to help us on on journey.Everything is relevant to the journey and so we must embrace all energies to truly understand the connection within.
