  1. It's not unlike 200 years ago when scientists looked at the sun and couldn't explain how hydrogen combustion can sustain a star and emit so much energy for billions of years…

  2. My answer is consciousness is an extra dimensional brane just like dark energy. M-Theory states the universe has 11 dimensions and we are only now beginning to discover what these dimensions are.

  3. Hard problem? As if consciousness is anything other than your brain processing the world. See how conscious you are after a lobotomy.

  4. He's wrong, flat out wrong. I never discount opinion, and I'm not doing it here. But he's extra large wrong as to the facts on this. Mind operate within the field of consciousness within the field of spirit, not the other way around. He has the tail wagging the dog, as well as everything still centered in the biological, biochemical, Newtonian, brain. And if you can't get past the seat of consciousness not being in the brain, like it took me a while to experience, then all he's going to succeed in doing is mapping the brain reeeal good, that's it. Him and his sciencey buddies will be U2'd, they still haven't found what they're looking for.

  5. It could be that consciousness is the phenomenon of sensory information penetrating the fabric of spacetime, via the aforementioned collection of mindless particles, like a conduit, into some higher dimension where awareness is a thing. This awareness could be entirely defined by the information available to be aware of. Thus sensory information is made available to the awareness in real time, while the awareness evaluates the input, and develops a strategy whereby the continued provision of sensory information is preserved by whatever means seems prudent in light of the information being gathered. Without this input, the awareness is subject to zero stimulus from this dimension, leaving it only to be aware of that which is normal for the dimension in which the awareness resides. Because we cannot mentally ascend to what is "real" in that dimension, it is impossible for our rudimentary brain to reconcile reality in this dimension with that one. We may well be part of some consciousness in that dimension that does not translate to meaningful stimulus in our brain, thus leaving us in the dark with regard to what that dimension is like.

  6. Even if we exactly know the neural correlates of consciousness (electrons moving a certain way as he supposes), it still doesn't explain WHY that gives rise to a subjective inner world.

  7. actually its well on the way to being explained. we can see actual memories being formed in the brain by monitoring chemical and electrical reactions. we can see them fade. we can see emotions formed in the brain through the same chemical observations. we can even alter and stimulate these memories and emotions. The basic fact that ones personality and core being can be radically changed through physical brain trauma proves that consciousness is the result of physical, chemical and electrical interactions in the brain.
