CEPE 2023: Smart Machines and Wise Guys: Can Intelligent Machines be Wise?

This presentation by Edward Spence of the University of Sydney was given on May 25 as part of the CEPE 2023 virtual conference. The abstract is as follows: This paper will address an important topic in the Philosophy and Ethics of Technology, which is that of artificial mediated agency and autonomy and its moral significance and impact on human wellbeing. Furthermore, it will address the key question of this paper whether artificial agency and autonomy can be extended to the notion of wisdom: if agency is mediated and distributed between humans and intelligent machines, can there also be a mediated wisdom?
