Back to school, back to school, to prove AI is no fool…
ChatGPT, OpenAI’s new artificially intelligent chatbot, can write essays on complex topics. WSJ’s Joanna Stern went back to high school AP Literature for a day to see if she could pass the class using just AI. Photo illustration: Elena Scotti

ChatGpt is pretty bad at maths but other than that I have found it pretty good
When I went to school calculators were banned. Yes, Im that old. They insisted a calculator would prevent students from learning how to do math.
Now calculators are required in many math courses.
The current uproar over Chat GPT reminds me of the calculator.
This is seriously impressive stuff, because this is just happening in real time… I used this and was mind blown
The waffle house has found it's new host
Technology is like a calculator, it is often created/improved by very smart ppl so the dumb ppl can utilize it to become more stupid. LoL. We are slowly transitioning from finding answers to locating an answer at one place. With every innovation, there will be small portion of the people who truly understand it and utilize it to better themselves, then there is everyone else. I'm probably in the latter group, sigh-.
just train it on your writing style and describe what you want it to write with great detail
Artificial intelligence makes humans unintelligent which in turn makes artificial intelligence unintelligent.
Terrific, the government has found a way to control the internet. Their innovation never ceases to amaze me.
5:02 what is this a group nodding session
I tried asking ChatGPT questions about astronomy. It kept saying the same and making apparent mistakes; some topics are not so common, so it doesn't have a lot of references (yet).
No, I don’t think it is a threat because, chatGPT talks like a politician and repeat itself. I’m in a masters and does not work for me
None of these programs can get beyond the obvious without tripping up. What they may do, however, is to raise the standards for human thought. A student who delivers a copy, cut and paste essay will probably have a much harder time to get passed the teacher's grading standards soon. Now, how could that be a bad thing?
Its not about cheating in school, this ai is about the future of ai system. Like jarvis – Just A Rather Very Intelligent System (J.A.R.V.I.S.) in IRONMAN.
I get that AI can be a tool for the foundation of the essay. However, isn't brainstorming the outlines also a necessary part of the essay? Thinking of the ideas, sequence, flow, connection ect helps develops critical thinking.
It just feels like even as a tool, AI would stunt the cognitive growth of students.
yall dont know how this work or how to cheat
you google a summary then input it into the chatgpt
It's always the betch as school system trying to over turn things
sure 😁
Keep in mind Chat GPT was trained on Data as of 2021 . If the enable access to the Internet in the near future and as it advances in time it can be compelling
i guess it will take AI for people to realize that take home essays/homework or online tests were never actually testing anyone
america's entire educational system is broken and it seems that AI is starting to highlight some of the issues, doesn't sound like the poors even knew you could hire a grad student to do all your work for you
Yeah please don’t say it works
The key I think is to not blindly submit generations from ChatGPT, but use the chat and context feature to fine-tune the response through multiple iterations, and then manually edit it to your liking. Also, you can't test the quality of responses this way, it has to be a blind test where the teacher does not know which one is real and which one is not.
I think what are lot of people fear, as what I call, Pro Cheaters.
Yes, if you straight copy paste from the AI, you're an idiot.
What people are deeply afraid of, are people who can learn the minimum needed to properly utilize chatGPT, proofread and fact check, and cite sources, all faster and with better outputs than someone doing things "honorably"
Goodbye democracy.
Your native language is English, and you are cheating compared with people who don't speak English and they strive to get their degree. This is why you see most of the scientists and even all of them are from poor countries.
As soon as your HS students start writing essays like tenured college professors, you know they didn't write it. Just teach the students how to use this tool, like they are going to be in all aspects of real life, and enjoy the massive boon to society.
Anyone who fights against better faster more accurate essay writing is a fool, and not a good teacher.( Obviously not this teacher, he was good.) Pocket professors are now a real life thing, get used to it.
If anything, it allows students to do other homework as their day isn't hogged up by writing essays
The reporter doesn't know how to prompt Chat GPT well. She could have pasted in the text from the PDF (used a quick phone scanner if needed with OCR tech) paste it in to Chat GPT and ask for talking points on the text. It would have passed.
Good homework should be illegal
All you teachers sound like my teachers. You won't have a Calculator in your pocket wherever you go lol. Except we do. I can probably fit a few thousand in my phone. Ai is no different.
the AI tool should not be used as a copy and paste thing. but an extension if what you already know or could know.
i use AI to help me with specific details and improvements upon on existing code that i already had written.
people immediately go copy and paste and off they go, thinking life is that easy. if life was that easy we would all be having jobs that makes money and not jobs that we love.
So..funny
Joanna Stern is blessed with youthful looks. She could truly pass for a HS senior at first glance.
this is crazy…what's coming next after chatgpt!?
I hate this video because it exposes the ai and now english teachers have universally complained about it and now it’s gone
Naaaa I’ll still use it in-fact I am paying subscription for it
The way the studies are happening here are so better then what I have seen
😮 classes are so full of liveliness open discussions no uniform use of all the technologies. I wish to bring such things to every corner of Globe
Basically what happened after years of development of A.I:
The KGB of English essays
This video was amazing! You won't believe what "Ultimate Gpt Toolbar" can do for you! It’s a crazy crhrome extension for chatgpt
Excellent video! You'll be amazed by the "Ultimate Gpt Toolbar" the ultimate GPT chrome extension!
This video was topnotch! You'll love "Ultimate Gpt Toolbar" the ultimate GPT toolbox!
If the book didn’t have twins AI woulda aced it, and vivid writing is not a must on rubric
So now people can cheat, not actually learn to use things and be dumber as intelligence was already slowing in growth the last 100 years. And people already can't answer questions about their own country or the Earth. State capitals… So how's letting A.I do all the work gonna make that… Better.
And then it could not be there one day, EMP attack or nuclear strike, solar flare like the Carrington event. Then what humans that have no real skill trying to act like they do like the machines relied on….
I use chatGPT for assistance with "examples" of how to write an essay if I am stuck. I use my own story and wording. I wouldn't want to have it write my whole essay for me.
