Magritte and Dali: Semiotics vs. Psychoanalysis
As humans, we have a basic need to make meaning, and we engage in this process through the use and interpretation of signs—words, images, objects, gestures, etc. Both Magritte and Dali understood how our system of signs, when left unexamined and unquestioned, produces a conventionalized, simplified and ultimately false view of the world. In this talk, Dr. Kimberly Macuare examines how both artists, in some of their most important works, take a self-conscious approach to expose and interrogate the ways we make meaning, ultimately destabilizing supposed shared views on language, visual representation and meaning-making and pushing us to a more disturbing but more accurate reality of the arbitrariness and instability of any meaning. .
This talk was simply GREAT! Thank you so much for sharing this!
