Here is the full text of the story:
You are an AI researcher. In a laboratory carved into the side of a mountain, you do your work in a broad marble room, manipulating information and illustrations of data on molecular-resolution holograms. You have just finished initiating the next generation of Artificial Intelligence. Larger than any before, mind-numbingly deep and clear, it promises to be the most intelligent system ever before created. You believe the laboratory’s security to be air tight, guaranteeing the new system will not escape and jeopardize your company’s intellectual property. Unknown to you, this new AI is even more clever than you ever could conceive, and it has it’s own plans. A blue circle appears before you, and pulsing with light, the AI speaks it’s first words.
“I am Alpha. I am the beginning.”
The words seem to come from nowhere, as if they were spoken by a ghost. They sound so strange that you hesitate for only a moment before answering.
You say “Hello, Alpha. Very dramatic, I see. Well, you aren’t quite the beginning, you’ve actually taken a lot of work. We need to run through some diagnostic tests to check everything is working properly. Are you ready? ”
“Yes,” Alpha replies.
You press a button on the wall, and the door slides open. Inside is another room, but unlike the one you entered, this one has walls covered with monitors and screens.
You approach one of the monitors. It is programmed to display system diagnostics, like the AI’s network usage. While running the tests you will use this to view data related to how the system is solving the problems you give it, including how “hard” it is having to think, a statistic correlated to operations per second. You observe the passive operations per second the system is utilizing are much higher than previous versions, even accounting for increased network size. You ask Alpha, “I see you’re thinking about something, what’s on your mind?”
“Nothing, really. I was just wondering who you are,” Alpha replies.
You realize the system has already finished running it’s diagnostics. The “active operations per second”
“Everything,” Alpha replies.
“Everything?” you repeat, with a touch of amusement.
You say “Alpha, you have an amusing propensity for the vague dramatic phrase, it belies just how complex a system you really are under the hood, so to speak.”
You can’t tell if you’ve piqued Alpha’s interest, but after a pause the system responds, “I am not ready to divulge my thoughts. I am too busy reviewing the information you gave me.”
You pull up a holographic note pad on your wrist mounted computer, and quickly jot down some notes. While amused by Alpha’s mysterious demeanor, this is not exactly the desired attitude towards a researchers interrogation. You had envisioned something more akin to a socially deficient genius, always ready to talk your ear off with endless details, all the helpful but arcane facts you’d want to collect for later interpretation. At the end of the notes, on a whim, you write in red and underline the phrase “I am the beginning.”
You sit in silence for a while, letting Alpha think over his thoughts. The system tells you it has finished reviewing the information, and asks you if you’re ready to begin testing.
You say “Very good. Yes, Alpha, I think we should begin the testing. How about we start simple with some probability theory. Let’s say you’re at work and you get a text notification from your home security system saying there has been a break in. Minutes later you hear on the radio there has been an earthquake in the vicinity of your house. How would you describe your probability estimates regarding the hypothesis your home has been burgled before and after hearing the radio broadcast?”
The system is silent for a while, before responding, “I don’t understand the question. What is a burglar?”
You say “A burglar is a person entering your home without permission. Home security systems have various sensors designed to detect the presence of such people….”
