Always wish the date was attached. He does say ‘as this century winds down’.
It’s becoming clearer all the time that the ‘evolution’—the development of—sapiens language was not “a gradual process”. Sapiens language means ‘storytelling’, not physiological speech; it’s the basis of sapiens cognition, not a codified communication device. It developed quickly as a result of circumstance, one of the happenstances being cross breeding of distantly related human populations —or even hybridization between different human species, the mechanism and opportunity talking place in as few as several generations. The faculty of storytelling was accidentally acquired but developed quickly in the circumstances the community from which the storytelling human ‘evolved’ —that is, was bred.
