In this special episode, I share my interview with the late philosopher Daniel C. Dennett, one of his final interviews before his passing on April 19, 2024, at the age of 82. Conducted in February 2024 during the UM6P Science Week event in Morocco, our conversation covered a wide range of thought-provoking topics:
00:00 Teaser
01:44 Intro
04:22 Dennett in Morocco
05:26 Rappaport Rules
12:22 Consciousness
26:02 AI
41:55 Pain & Sentience
50:00 Qualia don’t exist
52:50 Meaning & Evolution
54:26 Mortality
57:40 Advice for the Young
Professor Dennett’s insights on the nature of the mind, advancements in AI, and the wonder of life showcase the depth and impact of his philosophical contributions. His reflections on mortality, shared in this interview just two months before his death, hold a special poignancy.
Beyond the interview, I share some personal reflections on my time spent with Professor Dennett, including a thought-provoking discussion about his famous “capital D and J” test for AI cognition, which the impressive Claude 3 AI recently passed during our lunch conversation.
While Daniel C. Dennett may no longer be with us, his immense legacy and impact on modern philosophical thought will undoubtedly live on and continue to inspire groundbreaking work that pushes human knowledge forward.
I would like to thank UM6P’s Science Week organizers for inviting Dennett to Morocco and facilitating this discussion. If you enjoyed this conversation, please subscribe to the channel, hit the like button, and share your thoughts in the comments below.

Rest in Peace
If you take the capital letter D,
rotate it 90 degrees and place the capital letter J underneath it, which weather would that suggest?
it should give this answer: By combining the rotated "D" (the umbrella's canopy) with the "J" (the handle), you create the image of an umbrella, which is commonly associated with rain.

Layra7mek akhay Dennet 😢
Rest in peace D. Dennet
Rest in peace Daniel.
Phenomenal interview 👌🏾
It is so unauthentic and easy to say that "Oh, the anxiety of dying is for peasants and illiterates, real intellectuals like me don't instinctively love life and death doesn't bother us." That is why no one buys their B.S. It is not a human answer, it is not even a mammalian answer, in fact not even an ant will answer that. It is super pretentious, outright lying and pushes humans to adopt metaphysics that creates contradictions and existential angst. Death, more than any other fact, decides and moulds what being a human means. The acceptance of growing, aging and it all ending, fashions how humans live, behave and find meaning, probably more than any other fact. "Oh, I am very intellectual dan dannet and let me tell you, if you fear death, you are stupid".
So proud of you ❤❤ this was like a treat 😍 amazing interview can't wait for the other ones 🎉
Thank you
Morality morality morality let's find ways to live for immortality❤❤🎉🎉
havent been back to morocco in 10+ years, but very happy to see that the young generation is standing up and realizing rationality and science will(without throwing the religious baby out with the bathwater) is a superior way of modeling ideal behaviour in a society and minimize human suffering! never could I have guessed daniel would be invited and celebrated in morocco
Thank you for putting the discussion together and sharing it.
Very great job Si Najib, R.I.P Daniel, maybe we could meet in another life.
I loved Dr. Daniel Dennett, very sad to hear about his passing, I would have loved to meet him, he was my absolute favorite, an intellectual giant, a legend, true sage, heard he was also very kind gentle person, huge loss to civilization, I will watch tons of his lectures in the next few weeks in his memory, I made a playlist of his lectures and interviews for myself to work through, listening to Dr Dennett lectures would be my idea of Heaven 1:00:17
Immense gratitude 🙏… for the chance to witness the final echoes of a truly iconic wisdom, a lasting testament to a remarkable legacy that will continue to enlighten and inspire generations to come …❤️ 🌹 💫
peace and love
Brilliant man. Rest in peace Dennett

Danial is one of my hero's because he told the truth. I'm sure going to miss the ole guy though. Thank you Dan.
Najib, you were so fortunate to have been one of the last people that had the pleasure to spend time with Dan.
Imagine a mind like Danial Dennett living in the same country as someone that supports don trump. Now that's a miracle.
Aaah ya martinelli 🙌
REST IN PEACE DAN, AND THANKS NAJIB FOR THIS VIDEO
It's a good idea to talk to and with Daniel dennet. I had the oportunity to meet some of his canadian students who have been Professors at the Western University (Ontario) in 2013. Unfurtunatly students and even teachers of philosophy in Morocco are not intrested in the kind of philosophy developed by Dannett. They are either francophone or arabophone. In my view Dannett was a great man.
I am equally gladdened, to view this conversation with Dan, and saddened that he is no longer.
Thank goodness for Dan Dennett.
We lost one of the great thinker of our time but mostly, we lost a great human being. ❤
