As human beings, we always had the curiosity to discover what is beyond the sky. Just by looking up you can see magic. Those stars that decorate the sky,the moon, the sun were the first evidence that we are part of something bigger. Different from our human nature. And so we started exploring our Universe. But an important issue that is part of this exploration is figuring out whether we are the only living creatures, or there is another form of life on the outer space. And if so, how this could have an impact on our society…
Astrobiology seeks to answer three fundamental questions: 1) How does life begin to evolve? 2) Does life exists elsewhere in the universe? 3) What is culture’s future on Earth? And for anthropologists culture is religion, myths, art, technology, sports and all the other systematic knowledge transmitted across generations. And every society creates culture, and is created by it. So different societies will be affected differently.
Astrobiology’s emphasis is on the origin and evolution of life and this raises many questions, for instance: How is life constructed? The real evolution started in 17th century the moment that Galileo confirmed Copernicus that we are not the center of our universe but we are part of a wider solar system. And so many questions were raised by Scientists. Are we alone in the universe? Are out there advanced civilizations that we can detect and what would be the societal impact if we did?

To make things clear, when we are talking about “something out there” we mean an intelligent extraterrestrial life. Meaning life that is outside of the earth and we got no knowledge of its origin.
The only known inhabited planet in the whole universe is Earth but still there are habitable environments such as in Mars where life could exist. Imagine that in the first quarter of its history, in the first thousand million years of solar system history, was a much more habitable place than it is now. But still we haven’t found anything
Many claim that if aliens are more intelligent than us, one of the main ingredients of intelligence it to predict the future. They see could comes that we cannot foresee, they would simulate scenarios that we cannot even dream of.
It is considered that direct extraterrestrial contact is unlikely to happen and we have been brainwashed by the movies. It is worth mentioning that extraterrestrial life has nothing to do with the movies. Science fiction has a wide range of imagining how aliens would be. From sophisticated civilizations that could advance human race and help our technology, to imperial powers that want to subjugate humanity. In Hollywood there are special effects which show that they want to conquer our planet and harvest our resources but in reality it has to do mostly with our consciousness. We impose our thinking on aliens. So our fears and our thoughts are projected and they are the mirror of who we are, not a mirror of who they are. So it is our perspective, our imagination.
And as years go by, the evidence of life outside of earth, has entered into the realm of experimental science and is an issue of the outmost concern.
Scientists tend to believe that these creatures may not be carbon-based, or be made of DNA, breathe oxygen and need water to survive. There is a chance that the extraterrestrial life shares no kind of similarity to our brain architecture. That means that their world may be a world of smells, sounds rather than a world of eyesight, like our brain is constructed. And the form of life that we might encounter is microbes. And the existence of extraterrestrial bacteria is possible.
And if they were about to come to earth, there is a concern of contamination. This fear reminds us of the mission on the Moon. When Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin returned from the lunar surface, they were sealed up in biological isolation garments and flown to a quarantine facility to be locked away for three weeks in Houston, Texas.
It is said that the next century we will make contact with an alien civilization, due to the fact that NASA’S Telescope Kepler is up there and has discovered already thousands of earth-like planets orbiting other stars. So life could exist.
