CUHNHS
Dr Andy Clark, Consultant in Paediatric Allergy at CUH, advised caution from parents when interviewed on Good Morning Britain. He said: “The results are very exciting and start to challenge the way we think about introduce peanuts into the diet of infants but Megan was exceptionally lucky…. We definitely don’t want people to try this at home in the same way… It is very difficult, we have had very little evidence of what to do for years hence the government advice has been a little bit vague… The study is going to be an important in changing the way we think but not enough in itself to change the advice…. There are many other allergenic foods that we tend to avoid giving to babies, the same principle must apply. There are other studies underway and until those studies are fully reported and accepted we shouldn’t change what we are doing at the moment. …The researchers undertook a careful screening programme for this study. They found even at four or five months old, about one in 10 infants already had signs of a peanut allergy. There is some danger that parents could cause a reaction by giving their children peanuts. We still urge caution.”
