  1. Waiting for that underground man to show up.This is a great reading, and even better that it's by the author.
The question and concern is; is there any room in academia for those who don't buy into socialism? I like philosophy, with a degree in it and philosophy, but am baffled as to what niche exists for those who prefer Hayek and Friedman, yet are oriented towards metaphysics and not economics. There's a better way to state this, though this is the gist of it.

  2. I dont see how Hick's critique of Duchamp relates to the rest of the book. Throughout he makes the case the postmodernism ingenuously uses relativism to push a socialist agenda. His arguement is detailed, historical and enlightening. Then in the final chapter throws Duchamp into the mix without any context. Was Duchamp also a secret socialist? Was the art world of the 20's totally undeseving of criticism? Is art that is merely "ugly" really as pernicious as nihilism? As interesting and informative as I thought this book was, I found the final argument to be a little weak.

  3. Thanks Dr. Hicks. It seems that your book has been very influential in help Dr. Jordan Peterson in Canada in his defence of free speech and reason. Even though he is very much of a mystic, and embraces some of the themes of the right collectivists you mention in earlier chapters, there seems to be some integrity in him.

I also like the ending part where you explain postmodernism as really a form of "Ressentiment", it is near perfect in explaining the left and it's reactions to capitalism. Of course they can find elements to criticize in the system, but deep down, they know despite their critiques, deep down, they know they don't have anything better to offer.

  4. Wonderful book! This has had me thinking about my own school the Evergreen State College, which has entered the news lately because of far left intolerance and emotive protesting. Thanks for the salient insights and the concise threads of developing ideas through history. I missed out on Rousseau completely.

  5. Thank you Hicks. I got here because of your interview with jordan peterson. I hope the part of this book "why modern art is ugly" is found as audio version in your channel. I will look for that next. this was very informative.

  6. Oh such serenity! This series was like secretly comming upon an uncontacted tribe of failed starship people stranded one thousand years in the Australian outback. The thought passes through my mind to set up a clandestined open air museum around it. Perhaps we can buy Evergreen College for the same purpose.

  7. Postmodernism is basically on an epistemological model of how to delude yourself into believing in socialism, despite its repeated failures. The whole idea is literally delusional
