Poem
Written, Narrated and Produced by Gretha Louis
My Life
I enter the world innocent and new
greeted by you
my shots that I hated you for and my bath that I loved you for
Thank you for giving me love
As I grow
I see you through vaccinations, bumps, scrapes and bruises
I can take care of myself now see
I’m strong now see
I’m capable now I don’t need you
But then comes the time when I do
My last days are here
All I ask is you be honest with me
Hold me and
Thank you for giving me love
This poem is through the patient’s life span. The patient reflects on the nurses he has encountered throughout his life and expresses his gratitude. We are on the journey with him, so we are privy to when he is grateful and perhaps when he was not. His evolution is seen at the end of his days when his life comes full circle and it settles in, that he has felt the presence of nurses all his life. He has experienced nursing care at its heart, his heart swells, he is grateful. I Imagine the works of the many theorist we have studied here at play, especially Sister Simone Roach’s 6 “C”s, Compassion, competence, Confidence, Conscience and Commitment. He comes full circle and he is grateful.
