Have you ever seen those musicians that can just listen to a song once and figure the whole thing out? Being able to figure out the chords of a song by ear is a skill many new guitarists think is reserved for geniuses and prodigies β but itβs actually really easy! In this lesson, I want to show you a 3-step system that will have you finding the chords to just about any popular song without the help of tabs or sheet music.
Weβll start by going over two important music theory concepts β you can watch the full videos for those here:
Finding The Notes On The Guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KwMsuTKGkk
Understanding The Major Scale: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7wE8nzruMWM
Once youβve got that down, weβll get into the 3-step system. The first step involves finding the key of the song using a moveable major scale shape. Step two will have you placing a chord roadmap so you know which guitar chords occur in the key of the song. Finally, in step three, youβll listen to the song and pick out the correct chords from your roadmap.

Game changing lesson!!! Thanks again Andrew!
This is the only understandable guitar teacher I've seen
Thanks!
Thank You soo much for this lesson. I used to think theory was so boring and I didn't really like practicing scales but this lesson absolutely changed the concept. Also all of my ambiguities are cleared now.π
Genious
Thanks so much for this video. I've played guitar on and off for the best part of 34 years and have just randomly played chords against songs to try to find them (mostly not successfully!). This video has completely demystified the way songs are written! It makes complete sense now! Thank you!
Excellent video. Thanks Andrew.
Great man!
great video!
Thank you very much it's a lot helped
Great tutorial.
Would you be able to apply this method to say like a Bayside or Rise Against song? This is a great video but I'm curious if this would work for a more upbeat faster paced song?
Good.
Thank you man for teaching in best way, now i can play any song chord progression easily just after finding keyπ
If I play my guitar by ear, I'll get the lobes caught in the strings. π€£
subbed fr
I can follow most of what you are explaining but how does the E in Freight Train (E. Cotton) or the E in Panama Red (Peter Rowan) fit in the key of C? Using your formula, they would be minor chords. Am I missing something?
thank you
The problem is u have 6 string and i have only 4 π
Very informative. Great explanation!
Alot of knowledge
Amazing. I wish I had learned this years ago. Such a helpful approach to listening.
This is great, thank you!
Does anybody have some recommendations for music in major key that is easy to figure out so we can practice this?
I had some success with Bob Dylan, but struggle when songs have more complex structure or are in minor key.
Played for 20 years and never got this explained. This is pure magic and as you said, uplevels well beyond tabs. I followed the three steps and was already able to figure out a few songs within minutes (not all though). We did California by One Republic the other day and my wife was impressed. Thanks a bunch!!

Can you help finding the chord on this song ?
sooo good! canβt thank you enough for your wonderful lessons!
Great video! Are some of the chords played @7:39 power chords? Do you have the tabs for these?
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much.
I've watch several videos on this topic and this definitely seem to be the best for my understanding and natural not very good ear. Thank you!
Wow. Such a nice video on ear training. Will try it out π Hopefully won't play the wrong chords confidently. π
Does anyone have any suggestions of easy rock / pop songs to apply this process to???
Great information
Bruh thereβs this song Iβve been wanting to learn but I canβt find any tutorials lol. So hopefully this helps
keep up the good work, easy to learn from you. you are the best on youtube in this segment.
Damm you made this super simple to follow π
love this
So this was already very helpful but I have a question or two.
What if the scales used in a song are not 'western' and use something other than major/minor scales?
Also it would be very appreciated if you could show more examples from a wide selection of songs/genres from "easy to harder". i e. U2–With or Without You is level 1 whereas other songs with lots of arpeggios and subtle chord changes are level X–Z
Everyone else seems to get it, but you might as well be speaking another language to me.
Excellent video and explanation. Subscribed!
Been playing for years. But always checked somewhere else to find the chords. This is sooo helpful. And youve explained it so well. Easy to understand and apply. Thank you so much.

All fundamentals explained very nicely. Good work π
I've been playing for 35 years and this is probably the best video and explanation I've heard of how the scales and chords work together. I wish I had learned this when I began playing! Excellent job.
You earned a subscriber bro π
I have a question Sir, what if the song is based on a Minor key, you in step 1 directed to play Major scale starting on G string, what about Minor key?
