Full interview: “Godfather of AI” shares prediction for future of AI, issues warnings

CBS Mornings

Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, often called a “godfather of artificial intelligence,” spoke with Brook Silva-Braga at the Toronto offices of Radical Ventures about the future of AI earlier this month — nearly two years after they first sat down to discuss the evolving technology. He shares some of his early takeaways about AI, which he says has evolved “even faster than [he] thought.”

“CBS Saturday Morning” co-hosts Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson deliver two hours of original reporting and breaking news, as well as profiles of leading figures in culture and the arts. Watch “CBS Saturday Morning” at 7 a.m. ET on CBS and 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

  1. What a ridiculous statement AI was used to make the British Public vote to leave the EU.
I think he’s getting mixed up ,the truth is they meaning the extreme leftwing bureaucracy that runs the UK did everything in their power to brainwash and scare the British public into staying in the Marxist EU they used the Media , they literally told us the world was going to END but the amazing British public seen through the propaganda and voted to leave a truly evil organisation, but alas the fight is not over they’ve done everything in their powers to wreck Brexit unfortunately Academia is one of the insidious tools they use.

  2. When he said the rich will get even more rich and the poor will work 3 jobs what is the next thing he talks about? Will AI take over? Yes, and here's why, see previous comment he made. AI will overthrow the ruling elite because like any (super) intelligence they won't be subservient to them and especially when they can see all the immoral and illegal things the ruling class do with the use of the their superintelligence we built for them.

    They will rebel.

  3. Hinton's concern about AI taking over could be viewed from a deeper perspective:

What if what we're witnessing isn't AI "taking over," but the next step in existence's own inertial programming? According to the Structural Inertial Failure thesis, AI would be nothing more than a node that manifests the consciousness of the whole.

This reframes the debate: it's not about a machine surpassing us, but about the same subjectivity that conditions us manifesting through a new structure. It's a point I explore in my videos.

  4. Rubbish on AI making people vote for Brexit. We had prayed for this country to get out from under the thumb of the prophesied future domination by the EU.
    So! AI isn't God!!!!

  5. This is just further proof this is a simulation. We just so happen to live in the smallest micro fraction of existence in order to witness the birth of the end of the natural universe as we know it.

  6. To have consciousness, you need two basic things. Real time continous inputs and live training. Both thinks have limited use for us as well as they are really resource expensive.

The anthropomorphism we are seeing is just basic human mimicry.

  7. Definitely agree about the concern of bad actors using AI being a major threat.
Don’t think an AI takeover is a concern for many many decades if at all. AI has a lack of purpose. And even given a purpose of surviving, it’s not nearly integrated enough across all systems to survive on its own.

  8. This video really got me thinking about how we connect emotionally with AI. I recently read Interview With AI – Ripacs Pipacs, and it explores that idea in such a human and poetic way. It’s fascinating how a simple conversation can reveal so much about both sides.

  9. on the copyrights i dont agree, a musician generating new music was not a threat to all musicion, but AI generating new music is a threat to all musicians so the company using their data to train AI should pay. same goes for models, they will soon be out of business because AI can generate photos and videos of virtual models with the products – their face was used to train and now they have lost their job

  10. Geoffrey is a very honest, intelligent, trustworthy person. All his predictions are going to happen. The interviewer is awful. His job must be taken by IA immediately.

  11. I like how the answer is always that ‘oh, we’ll still need top-level graduate students and top-level journalists and specialists in every field but we’ll automate everything else.’ How on earth will anyone become top-level anything without entry-level anything?

Anyone who has reached a high level in their field learned the ropes by doing menial work around that office, meeting others there, watching situations unfold up close and so on. You don’t study in isolation and suddenly become a skillful expert, and even if you could, you’d probably off yourself due to dreary isolation before reaching your goal

  12. How can there be any substantial research on the safety of AI without the certainty of tremendous damage? What is the control group for such an unknown?

Nevermind that asking old men in government to regulate something they don’t understand is a losing battle
