Fundamentals of Sculpture: A Cardboard Art Exhibition is an assignment designed to introduce students to a number of important concepts that form the fundamental core of what it means to be a sculptor. This includes labor, time management, material awareness and material conservation, tool use and care, the responsibilities of a communal work space and craftsmanship. This project also stresses a number of formal concepts related to the making of art such as scale, volume and form, interior and exterior relationships, texture and tactility, activated space, light and shadow and balance. The exhibition is a critical component of the project, as is the sculpture’s structural integrity, attention to detail and accurate scaling.
