  1. I feel cyberpunk is a horror, of how it explores how terrible this world can become. Terrible but beautiful, but still terrible. The question of what make someone… someone… and the other philosophical questions of what if…

  2. Kusunagi's cocern over keeping her sense of identity reminds me of the buddhist view of the self. That it's largely an illusion. There is no immortal soul with special or unique characteristics that will survive death. As it is maintained more in judeo-christian tradition. In life the concept of one's identity or self is not permanent either but in a state of flux.

  3. Hong Kong is destroyed now, in fight for its new identity. Just like the Major's and the Puppet Master's old identities are destroyed in fight. I wonder what new person will Hong Kong become…

  4. It's ingriguing how different cultures bring up different things that stimulate our brain. We might come from different places, however when it comes down to stimulating certain emotions, feelings, uncoscious thoughts, we all have something in common as I am sure, everyone watching those scenes felt a similar feeling/emotion/thought:

It's a place where time doesn't apply to the scene, existing outside of time (2:13), yet, simultaneously these scenes seem to be bound to time. They appear to be locked in that specific moment, never able to escape. They simply "exist" in that very moment, freed and chained by time.

  5. I liked your talk about the aspect to aspect but you make the mistake to assume it is set in Japan. In the movie there was literally no japanese text what so ever so far as I saw, it was all Chinese so it’s probably not only modeled of Hong Kong but probably actually supposed to be Hong Kong in the future. Also a little to heavy on the post modern deconstruction for my taste, kinda biased but hey, that’s just my opinion.

  6. The aspect to aspect concept can easily be seen in 1917 as well, a ‘goal oriented’ film. Always great to be able to revisit your essays!
