This salon discussion is based on a few recently published articles in DailyNous (http://dailynous.com/2020/07/30/philosophers-gpt-3), in which philosophers seek to make sense of GPT-3, a new powerful language model developed by OpenAI.
We’ll start with comments by two of the authors to introduce their perspective on GPT-3, before opening up for group discussion:
A Digital Remix of Humanity | Henry Shevlin, Research Associate, Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence, University of Cambridge
Language and Intelligence | Carlos Montemayor, Professor of Philosophy, San Francisco State University
We’ll also review a few of GPT 3’s best text creations; feel free to bring your favorite candidates!
Foresight’s weekly salons:
Our community meets weekly on Thursdays at 11 AM PT / 8 PM CEST to explore cutting edge topics & undercover science.
We leave ample time for discussion and socializing so you can meet the brilliant speakers and fellow participants in breakout rooms.
Feeling like leading an inspiring salon or taking us into a deep-dive with your presentation? Nothing would have us more excited: you can apply to be a speaker, using this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/u/1/d/e 1FAIpQLSeutDfZZK1BzYsZsUTT3bsm8Uw0Vffpk3EPS_66HYV2IP8l_A/viewform

1:18:13 it’s like a stepping stone. I also like the comparison of GPT-3 vs Watson to Daniel Kahneman’s system 1 and system 2. If you could combine a fast / associative system with a mathematical / logical more rigorous system! – Reminds me of Joscha Bach’s idea of trying to find a way to unite philosophy and mathematics again, but strictly within the constraints of what is actually computable. It’s like we can see the peak / the summit, and almost can imagine a way, but I fear there will be clouds ahead and the summer of AI might not last.
Edit: if GPT3 is more akin to dreaming than thinking, the question still remains: can we make it wake up? What does it take to wake up?
