This whole line of inquiry assumes that consciousness is "special" or "a mystery". There's no evidence for consciousness being anything beyond higher order brain function, and if you accept that and re-read this research, all you'll hear is, "Yep, we already knew microtubules carry chems needed for neurons to work, this delays their disruption by anesthetics, and thus delays loss of consciousness." Note how the study shows that you still lose consciousness anyway after a while longer. The fact that you can disrupt consciousness using any chemicals at all should tell you that it's just neurons firing, like other brain functions.
Why would serious scientists chase this kind of consciousness quantum-woo, even the amazingly intelligent Penrose (who I admire a lot by the way)? They have to believe consciousness is special and persists eternally, basically resurrecting the idea of a "soul" or "heaven", because they are afraid of dying and what it really means. This lets you be a scientist, and yet be a closeted religious person, without getting laughed at for the irony.
This is just like Dr. MacDougall who tried to weigh people before and after death to detect the soul leaving the body. He was already convinced that souls exist, found no evidence for it, and ignored his scientific results and kept believing in a "soul" anyway. This just shows that the ego is a powerful drug and fear clouds our judgement sometimes. We already have a way to cheat death and live on without the need to re-invent the idea of souls and heaven: have kids. And we have lots of scientific evidence that kids exist.
