How do we know our carbon emissions?

While filming another video, I learned about a fascinating technique used to estimate our carbon emissions, and is used by governments around the world to validate their emission figures, and specifically their emission reductions. Many thanks to Dr Clement Albergel at the European Space Agency’s climate office for helping with this video!

How do we know what our carbon emissions are? Where does carbon emission data come from? In this video I talk to the European Space Agency’s climate office about how they use satellites to monitor carbon emissions from space, and how satellites can improve how we estimate carbon emissions on the ground.

  1. I got a strange vibe from this video. It made me feel like countries don't CARE if we know that they are emitting CO2 at increasing rates. It's like they are saying, "So what are you gonna do about it?"

  2. That joke about getting full value from the hat purchase hits different after watching your "I Don't Think I Can Do This Anymore" video. 😢

  3. I’ll tell you a number. Britain’s record high carbon emissions came in the early 1970’s – since then Britain commenced writing carbon emission regulation into law , in essentially a falling carbon environment, at ruinous expense.

  4. Why do they never say how much of the atmosphere is C02? They talk about everything but this one very important figure. The reason you never here about this is obvious. The fact is that C02 is .04% of the atmosphere and C02 caused by human activity is about .01% of the .04%. Climate alarmists can not explain how .01% of C02 can have the large effect on climate change they claim it does.

  5. If only we committed to utilizing modern nuclear energy options… It would genuinely help improve our situation SO MUCH. It's the biggest mistake we moved away from this due to emotions and fear not facts and logic

  6. I would love to see a statistically significant test taken, Climate Change Deniers and Climate Change Believers graphed by INTELLIGENCE as measured with an IQ test.

Any doubt out there which way the deniers would tip the scales would tip?

  7. Have you ever heard about spectroscopy?

Adding a light source (often called as white light) in background and gas in front and then measuring the difference… And making same from the space… We can see each element that we want, because they all have their specific absorption wavelenghts…

You can just make a darkened room with a pinpoint of light. Then add a prism in it. This spreads the light (often sunlight) and gives these rainbow colors. When you look more closely you will see these dark lines in it. Those lines are absorbtion lines of specific molecules like methane. This knowledge is few centuries old…

And we can see distant stars spectrum or even what is in the atmosphere in some exoplanets. It is far easier to see down to nearby Earth…
