How Meditation Works & Science-Based Effective Meditations | Huberman Lab Podcast #96

Andrew Huberman

In this episode, I discuss the biological mechanisms of the state changes that occur during different types of meditation and describe how to develop the meditation practice optimal for you. I explain key meditation principles, such as using specific breathwork patterns and adjusting your perception to specific locations along the continuum between interoception, exteroception and dissociation. I discuss how meditation practices lead to long-term trait changes and neuroplasticity, including changing your default mood, reducing baseline anxiety/depression, increasing your ability to focus, enhancing relaxation, improving sleep, and increasing your overall happiness level. I also explain the concept behind the “third-eye center,” what mindfulness is from a biological standpoint, the power of ultra-brief meditations and how to select the best meditation and time and duration to meditate to meet your need. I also explain a novel open-eyed perception-based meditation that may enhance focus, relaxation and task-switching ability. Whether you are a novice or an experienced meditator or simply interested in how our brain controls different aspects of conscious awareness and self-regulation, this episode should interest you.

  1. The pineal gland is said to be the antenna of the mind to sense cosmic energy. It is the third eyes and has been for 6000 years. It is representing by it s cone shape, that pine cone shape is in all religious documentations. The Pope has a staff with a big pine cone shape right on top of the staff representing the pineal gland or the pituary gland. That gland that create mélatonine has a pine cone shape a receive light from the optique nerves. It is also scientifically knowned the is also as a crystalline structure in it the generate electricity when trigger. So it goes far above just making mélamine. Also right in front of the Vatican in front of the obelix you have a big sculpture of the pineal gland cone shape. It goes up to 6000 years on the past has representing the spiritual antenna in the human body. Because of that crystalline part it acts like an antenna. It has always been known has the 3 eyes for 6000 years.

Meditation is a tool to control the mind. Here I can make an analogy with canabis. They search what canabis those, it is very simple. Canabis shuts down memory, you brain refuse to remember so you fall in the present moment and start laughing having fun because the heavyness of your anxiety and stress you mind just stop remember them so are are like free of those. The purpose of meditation is to achieve that state. Some type of meditations, the main one. It is to stop thinking, shut down the mind and the ego and the internal dialogue so you only feel free from the interference of your thoughts, then joy become the normal state. Once at that point you are facing the stairs of meditations. You have not yet started but you are ready. Other type of meditation like one point mindedness that is to develop concentration. But also it is like the Hawaiian meditation to only use your periphical vision . You eyes have the mode of seeing, the focus and unfocus way. People are always on the focus mode right brain. Once you start on pointedness meditation, some of those of that type like lying down, doing a triangle with your hand , time, major finger of both hands making a triangle you lie down bring your hands in front of your eyes and look through the triangle your hands are making and you fix a point at the infinite. Then your body falls asleep in a state of hypogogy sorry for the spelling I am not Englophone. But you get what I say. So you with time you become self hypnosis, your body sleep and you breath like when you sleep and with time inside the triangle you will start seeing all different parts of your life like a movie. So you can see your trauma but you see them like on a screen outside of you, since your mind is not sleeping then you see all your trauma appear slowly a different one each day, you start remembering and seeing your pijama when you were two years old , and brain functions develop automatically just by the process of that technique. So that technique is not one where you shut down your thoughts. But in a 6 months you will get the results of 20 years of phychoanalisys. You see you trauma but don't feel them so you can objectively, intellectually understand then and put an end to them. As simple as that.

After many hours of that you obtain both mode of vision all human have you can switch at will from the focus looking which is all we are supposed to know to do , to go totally unfocus and have your mind perceive what is seen while not looking. So you see a totally different world. Totally simple but not known.

  2. Again no no no you are talking of awareness displacement and you tell that in case of anxiety you should change your awareness externally. That is the very hard way, in those case it is respiration techniques that help and should be used for. The wandering mind, the over thinking they called that the internal dialogue that can become obsessive, they call it the crazy horse of the mind. In that case the ability of focus awareness is reduced greatly so if you have no force you cannot start concentrating on something else to relieve the problem . You already lost your will power over awareness, you have to do breathing meditations for that.

Meditation is a tool that has a reason, purpose and a final goal. You mention none of that.

  3. Again I am sorry to disagree. You are not talking about meditation. I have 50 years of intense learning on the subject, doctorat in ontology and I have above 7000 hours of méditations and know 80 different types of meditations and mental exercises. This goes way way above what you say, you don't begin to scratch the most superficial layers of the topic.

You have no understanding of what meditations and mental exercises are.

You are talking of psychology and a small aspect of the neurological aspect of internal, external awareness and the possibility of focusing on two or perhaps 3 things at a time. This has a name in meditation technique it is called superpositioning, meaning you do two types of meditations at the same time, with time you can achieve 12 levels of superpositions , 12 different focus or practicing 12 differents meditations at the same time and more. It is called superpositioning. They also call that time acceleration. There are studies that explains effects of meditation that goes ways deeper than what is in the content of this video. I am sorry but I respectfully disagree you don't begin to understand what meditation his. You only report what your instruments can mesured and there are many many more advanced studies that have been done on the subject that goes far deeper.

I had proof of much much more.

The term meditate should not appear in the title.

You really don't have the understanding of what meditation his.

What you are talking about is psychology and neurology or a miniscule aspect of the functionality of the mind, only 2% of a superficial aspect of awareness. You are just describing a very basic aspect of the mind. You are not talking about meditation. Meditation is absolutely not that.

  4. You repeated twice that there are meditation that can be done walking. I already know these meditations techniques. But you repeated twice that, so you do repeat multiple time. And it is a lost of time.

Not to criticize but our time is precious. Say things once and go straight to the point please.

We accept your publicities please respect our time.

    Thank you.

  5. To be more precise about you repeating yourself, in your intro you repeated 3 times that the focus of what you want to address is meditation that address FOCUS SLEEP MOOD.

You repeated 3 times that this is what you wanted to talk about.

    Understood the first time. 😊

  6. I love how science and spirituality say the same thing in different ways.

I'd say the only thing missing here is to question your reality. Everything you think you know is an assumption. Meditate on that, and you'll find something.

  7. The third eye is an eye used to see past the physical world, not as a literal eye to see things around us physically. When you de calcify it and meditate and pray while focusing on it you'll see flashes of light. Me and multiple of my friends have it happen often.

  9. I &ot more from this than any meditation. I have experience dis association after being abused by who I thought was a partner . That was years ago now I'm fully healed that's why I can talk about it
I now am extremely calm I love to walk n do wim hoff breathing
I don't meditate as I spend my days in silence which is good enough . I get more from breathing exercises than anything inclua particular exercise which is better than drugs it's mind blowing . Thanks for this I will share far n wide .

  10. Thank you for saying we don't know if animals can think of the past, present and future. So much arrogance and statements about animals when there so much we don't yet understand.

  11. There is technology at least now. Try the Vision Pro. Block your external peripheral and make it virtual. Then change what you see with somebody else sees on another Vision Pro by sharing screen and see the other perspective looking at you. See yourself finding yourself, find yourself find God.

  12. This has provided some life changing to info. I fall asleep easily but staying asleep is challenging. The insight on meditating on something external has helped me get back to sleep consistently.

  13. Omg 😮 my natural meditation outlets.. (before I even started practicing ((thinking I needed to start doing so 😂lol)) or realized I actually already had) washing dishes: my internal. The repetitive almost ‘mindless’ tasks… the running water. Hot water on hands …. I would start reflecting on the day, how and why etc and was essentially not aware where by mind had gone and would achieve beautiful feedback 😊…. Which could lead to acceptance
My external: driving (especially in silence) the sound of the motor, the bumps on the road, the VIBRATIONS… the process going out… driving, to me, requires more focus and instinct than thought, you don’t have to tell myself OK there’s a stop sign up there, I better take foot off pedal and start braking ….. focusing on the external. The, where you are going, what doing, why…
Maybe I was really set on getting one specific thing done that day cause it was most urgent, priority etc and while focusing on the external world, I realize the weather is far from ideal and would make so much more difficult and didn’t need to push myself or something and instead I come to the conclusion. Well maybe I should ‘let it go’ and since the weather was like, whatever, it would be a good day to do this instead…. And let go of the feeling and the worry along with it 🥰
One thing I have yet to address with myself is my procrastination. I have procrastinated on my procrastination 😜
I like how you have talked about how you like to leave things to the last moment for how the stress response pushes you to strive harder and the drive/feeling you get, I believe?
Well since meditation is often focusing on the now, internal or external, and the way to relieve yourself of anxieties (future) depression, (past) (type thing😅) , Is to live in the moment…. I have summed my procrastination up to; it’s not leaving it until the ‘last moment’, it’s leaving it until: The Moment. 😂 yeah people, let it resonate…. Kidding…. Or am it? 😏

I’m a huge fan, of both you, your work, and really, your guests as well 🙏🏻

And in relation to the mediatiton and self awareness topic, I would like to thank you. You (as in who you are and how you think and by sharing that with others) have actually helped my become more aware of tendencies I have. (I love to explain things and I have been told I can talk a lot😂…which you do beautifully, I, very easily, listen to you for hours on end) until I heard explained by you, I had never even considered. There have been several incidences where you explained something and been like, but that’s just me, I’m a bit different, weird etc 💖 and it was eye opening for me, like , hot damn 😂😂that’s me too! Weird brains think alike?
Curiousity …I constantly crave to learn. The pursuit of knowledge, connections and experiences 🤘🏻
Thank you for sharing everything you do and all you attribute to this world by just being you.
Much respect. Keep on rocking the science (and podcast) world 🫡

  14. Did he denounce BetterHelp™? This is the most educational set of poorly researched ad ridden videos in our culture. Address the issue, please.

    What is the BetterHelp controversy?

    BetterHelp Controversy EXAMINED [2024]

Some users have complained that therapists on the platform seem unprofessional, inexperienced, or underqualified. Unlike in-person therapy, BetterHelp users claimed they could not check the credentials or licenses of the therapists they were matched with.

  15. Does anyone here had experienced any changes on dreams remembering upon starting meditating ? For me , every time I start a meditation routine ( lets say 2 x 10 minutes a day) … I start to be have vivid dream which I can remember in details .

  16. I didn't even know exteroceptive meditations had a name; all the meditative techniques I was taught were interoceptive, and I'm heavily interoceptively aware from youth (can count my heartbeat at will, can feel digestive processes to a degree, can feel and describe with great precision specific parts of the body that are in pain and the exact sensation of the pain for doctors, sensitive to touch and pressure and fabric textures on the skin and how clothing is affecting my circulation, etc).

When I was in college, I struggled with prolonged, severe dissociation/derealization, where for days or weeks at a time in every waking moment, I was hyper-aware of my own mental existence and thoughts, while the world and even my body seemed like a cloud of fog. This was distressing to the point that I was harming myself, trying to feel connected to my body and the world again. So I began to do what I referred to as "decompressing". It was basically just a form of exteroceptive meditation, where instead of closing my eyes, I went outdoors (usually at night) and picked a field of vision to fix my gaze on, and tried to tune into every sense at once, cataloguing every breeze, the temperature, scents, sounds close and far away, and every texture in the trees/landscape/building/stars I was looking at, and memorizing them. My classmates probably thought I was strange when they saw me standing in the driveways after dark, or on a high place/the edge of the field, staring off into the sky or middle distance for 20 minutes at a time. But it was one of the most beneficial things I did, and helped keep me grounded and avoid self-harm, since I stopped focusing so acutely on my depressive thoughts and stress responses.

Super glad to know that maybe there's more resources out there for people like me, because while I have used interoceptive techniques recently to good effect, mostly to calm myself for sleep (particularly those that start out with controlled breathing/bodily awareness and move into non-body-centered visualizations), exteroceptive practices might be more emotionally stabilizing for me in the long run. Super informative episode!

  17. Thank you for another amazing podcast and for reinforcing the need to meditate POV! It really works and the more of us that do it the more SANITY we create for those who need it, especially since we're headed for the ugliest election year in our history. I love your timestamps!

  18. Being able to persevere everything all at once fucking sucks ass, and having tinnitus for most of my adult life indeed consumes a huge chunk of brain's processing.

  19. The pineal gland is made up of piezoelectric cristals it's known as the third eye it produces the chemical melatonin it regulates our sleep patterns, to much fluoride cause the pineal gland to reduce the production of melatonin.
Many call the pineal gland our built in radio cristal set,
