How to green the world's deserts and reverse climate change | Allan Savory

TED

“Desertification is a fancy word for land that is turning to desert,” begins Allan Savory in this quietly powerful talk. And terrifyingly, it’s happening to about two-thirds of the world’s grasslands, accelerating climate change and causing traditional grazing societies to descend into social chaos. Savory has devoted his life to stopping it. He now believes — and his work so far shows — that a surprising factor can protect grasslands and even reclaim degraded land that was once desert.

  1. Violent Horn of Africa an interesting phrase so how come he didn't remark about the geo-politics of other areas when he showed photos of other examples of deforestation in other areas in the world

  2. He only tells disgusting lies, none of which are even slightly backed by any scientific evidence. Stop supporting this man, a man that killed 40,000 elephants on a whim.

  3. you and the people listening to you are the saddest. you were on the front lines and screwed the pooch. this is still happening with "global warming" today……. now i have to teach my grandkids how not to eff it up and fix things.

  4. I wonder how long a foreign aid donated 1000 strong herd of livestock would last on the Horn of Africa.
This is such a global complex issue.
Education would be needed as well as decreasing poverty levels ect… Or they will just sell/poach/eat the solution

  5. It is a great solution.
Would be a better solution if after the land is restored, we let the wild animals to repopulate the land (where the meat is not necessary for surviving of course). Earth can heal itself if we help a little bit, and don't destroy it more. One of the main reasons for climate change is agriculture – we eat to much animal products. We mostly use crops to feed animals – but we could easily feed ourselves with less land! We should have less land, eat more plants, less livestock, there will be more wild animals, Earth heals, everybody healthier, world peace.
    Have a great day!

  6. Beware of anyone who says there's only one solution — particularly a guy who says that his prior solution was a disaster for elephants. This guy doesn't make a strong case, in my opinion.

  7. I think this is kind of what's happening in the US (or at least where I'm from in Cali) where I see sheep all congregating together grazing on fenced grasslands. I thought this was a strange sight but it looked like the sheep were healthy & safe. This man is my new hero – incredible job – hopefully he gets a noble prize in the future. I'm praying this technique can be implemented in all parts of the US – especially W. Virginia where the once beautiful landscape is now a wasted coal mine and the once American Great Plains

  8. Brilliant! Why is this dated 2013 and its the first time I've heard of it? 2020. Is he incorrect or is the story he is telling just not as good at selling news papers as the " we are all gunna shrivel up and die" story ? Do you ever get the feeling that the narrative being spun by the media has ulterior motives? I've never been a conspiracy theorist, unlike my brother but I'm getting to the point where I feel I owe him an apology.
