In this Caltech video, Walter Kortschak and the first three graduate students to be selected as Kortschak Scholars at Caltech discuss the role of universities in generating world-changing ideas and technology, particularly in emerging areas of computer science and artificial intelligence such as machine learning, quantum information, and robotics.
Caltech graduate students Victor Dorobantu, Jennifer Y. Sun, and Andrea Coladangelo touch on their research, highlighting the potential for social benefit that inspires them. In conversation with Walter Kortschak, they share how being at Caltech accelerates and broadens their work.
Kortschak is a venture capitalist and philanthropist who graduated from Caltech in 1982 and now serves on its board of trustees. He and his wife, Marcia, established the Kortschak Scholars program with a $5 million pledge to Break Through: The Caltech Campaign in 2017.
The Kortschak Scholars program provides generous fellowships and exceptional learning and networking opportunities to students in Computing and Mathematical Sciences at Caltech. The cohort is expected to build to 10 Kortschak Scholars at any given time—which eventually will be augmented by an active alumni community.
As Walter Kortschak comments on his vision for the program, the students share their experiences as its first fellowship recipients, describing total research flexibility and ample cross-field collaboration. Kortschak and the three students explore how this freedom to explore and pursue ideas that no one had thought of in the past can lead to breakthroughs that benefit humanity.
