Superb.
Dennett thinks of himself as some maverick genius like Pierre Bayle or Darwin. He at least gives a superficial impression of being one. But I have a theory which takes some effort to see; and though I feel somewhat like the child in the Emperor's New Clothes, for the good of human knowledge I must express it: I think one could reduce him to a pompous gnome with a weak chin covered by tufts… And my pirate wore beige trousers (no rips), sandals, and no wooden leg, although admittedly the first I saw was his profile. Needless to say, he was a handsome devil. But suppose I saw no particulars or detail. What would this prove? What impressionist would not look askance at somone who quizzed him: "Tell me exactly how many stars there were in the sky you imagined?!" What astronomer could do more?
